I canty afford Rent or my travel expenses

I have been working for around 5 years and have debts of £12,000, but my main problem is my parents have moved away in the past 3 months and I am now renting accomodation. Due to this I have been borrowing money for Travel to work and rent and food and now cannot afford my rent and travel to work. This means I am now going to lose my job. Is there any help I can get finaincialy to pay my travel expenses and rent until I am back on my feet or does it look like I am going to have to give up work and lose my home ?

How much is your rent/travel? Is there any way these can be reduced, such as season tickets for travel or renting a room in a house?
  • My Rent is £250 (which is for a room in a house) per month and Travel is £40 per week as I cant drive and have to travel my train, the main problem is I return to work on the 2nd of Jan and have no money whatsoever to pay for a ticket, I have applied for loans everywhere but due to my past problems with debt I am unable to get one, if I cant get to work then I will be sacked and then cant afford rent food or anything and am now feeling there is no way out and am getting more depressed (which I have suffered with in the past)

    Hi Jay,

First things first, dont you have any family or friends you can borrow from?
Any items you can sell to get some cash in quickly.

Also may be worth seeing the bank about an emergency overdraft as if you lose your job then they will have less chance of getting there money back.

I would seriously reconsider your situation as well.
40 quid a week for travel is very expensive? Cant you find work nearer or even move closer to work?

Other things to consider is posting an SOA so we can help you get out of the situation you are in.

Also dont let it get you down, keep positive, easy to say, but i have transformed my life by changing my outlook and being more positive.

    Good luck, keep us informed

Have you rang work to explain your situation to them? They may be able to either contribute towards your travel arrangements or possibly advance you some of your next months wages?

Also, do you know anybody you could share a lift to work with? You could pay towards there petrol bill?

Sounds like you need a gift of the train fare to work next Tuesday, so you can go to work, explain your problem and find out whether you can have an advance of pay to get your £40 train ticket. But if you already have no money for the whole of January to pay your food and rent etc, you are in significant difficulties. Others know much more about benefits and debts than me, but sounds like you need to make an appointment at the Citizens Advice Bureau urgently. Good luck and hope 2007 is the year you start on your debt-free journey.:)

    hi there

I agree with Kev. Your best bet is to stick a SOA up for us to have a look at.

After this, what have you got in your cupbaords? List it up on the old style board and theyll see if theres any way you can eke out the food till you get paid.

Once youve done your statement of affairs things will look a bit brighter, Im sure we will be able to help

    Hang in there

Just anopther thought, would it be possible to work from home?

All you need knowadays is a phoneline :)

if you were to move your monthly rent budget would be around 350 a nmonth, !!! you will be saving 160 quid, you could prob find somewhere nicer and all to yourself for that :)

To me this doesnt work, you should be getting much higher pay, too much of your income is going on travel, id seriously ask for a payrise, to compesate for this
  • regarding a emergency overdraft what amount would I be able to get as my account is already £180 overdrawn which is un-authorised as this seems to be the only way I can get out of this situation ?
