Power flushing the pipes!

Options
Rads have cold spots, plumber reckons £450 to power flush the system....seems a lot of money, on top of the £150 for the new pump that had packed up (because of the muck in the pipes) but if we don't get it done, the new pump will go the way of the old one! So...any advice or opinions please.........and how exactly will they do it?..........

  • £450 isn't outrageously high for a powerflush. It depends where you are and how many radiators you have amongst other considerations.
As to how it's done, they use a powerflushing machine which pumps water and cleaning chemicals around the system. See http://www.kamco.co.uk/powerflushing.htm

  • Many thanks, have had a good read and feel a bit better about the cost now! wasn't sure if there was a DIY option, but if there were it would not be very powerful, and obviously not as effective!

If the system is badly sludged that won't be up to the job.
A powerflush is a reasonably easy DIY if you know some plumbing basics.
The machine can be hired from most tool hire centres for about 50 quid so will save you a lot of money if you're happy to do it yourself.
  • British GAS did mine a year ago and it was worth every penny - one rad in particular that had not worked fproperly for the last 20 years (seriously!) is now fine - in fact we keep turning the heating down and then turning it down again - wish I'd had it done years ago.

how much did you pay for british gas to get it done?
  • Thanks for all the above.....how much Britgas charge? I know it does need doing and will make a difference...just seems an awful lot of money for a service, I mean it's not like we are getting any new rads or pipes or "stuff".....
