Response Times on LCD TVs

Hi Everyone,
Just wondering if someone could tell me how an LCD TV (23 or 26") with a response time of 16ms or 18ms would compare to a CRT? Am I right in thinking CRT's don't have response times? I'm looking for an LCD TV that would be used quite often for playing PS2 games and perhaps even PC games - an old CRT is used for the PS2 games at the moment so would an LCD with those kind of response times work similarly? Thanks.
Regards
Michelle

I think for games 18 ms would be a bit too slow, 16 ms would be ok (and try and get a bit faster if possible). CRT's do have a response time but it's the phosphor itself which is in the region of nanoseconds so not quite a fair comparison with lcd although you can still get flicker but this is down to refresh frequency."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

for games and sports programs i would say 16ms is too slow and you may get smearing
Saying that different companies report the response time in a different way so a cheap tv with 8ms response may actually be worse than a decent one with 16ms
Unfortunately another example of companies using terminology to confuse people and get them to buy inferior products.

Thanks for the responses - it seems from what you're saying those response times are a bit slow which is what I'd thought myself. I'm not finding it easy to find a decent set with a better response time within budget though
It is annoying that the companies are doing that with the response times - it's confusing enough as it is for us non techie experts!

try looking at a samsung n71 series or the model up from a sony kdl-20s2030. there's also toshiba wlt56 series.NURSE: "Shouldn't it be sterilized, doctor?"

Hi DrBenway,
Thanks for the tips - I couldn't find anything on Samsung n71 - I found f71 and n73 ranges but no n71? Both those ranges only have tvs over 32" though and the largest this can be is 26". I looked at both the Sony and the Toshiba though and they seem a little out of my price range. Are these the only ones that you would think are good enough for games then? Thanks.

My apologies i meant r71 for the samsung.
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for a LCD TV/Monitor for my front room but it has to double up as the monitor for a currently headless file server.
As i am currently using a 14inch portable i'm not looking for any bigger than 23inch. I have spent the last 2 or 3 weekends going round tv shops hassling the sales people to show off their tele's with a non hd signal and the only ones that had an acceptable picture on non hd where the 3 i mentioned with the goodmans gtvl19w17hd being on the next tier down.
I going to plump for the sony or the samsung dependant on what offers are gonna be about upto and over xmas.
You really need to go in and see them for yourself because i was shocked at how bad the tv picture quality can be on some screens compared to others on the same signal.
If you are after in depth discussion of lcd tvs then you could head off to avforums although it is a very busy site with some very long threads and lots to wade through.

Hi Dr Benway,
Yeah I've already been scouring through avforums as well for some info. There doesn't seem to be a great deal on the smaller size models though which is a shame.
I'll carry on looking but if I can't find anything in budget I might end up going for the 23" philips or the 26" hannsg anyway and if my brother finds it's too slow for his games he could just use his pc monitor or get a new one (he's planning on a new computer in the Jan sales anyway so I might have to do that if I can't come up with anything else suitable soon as I'm running out of time to order in time for christmas!)
I think the Sony or the Samsung look very good choices - the Sony's just a bit over-budget for me (if I could get it under the £400 mark somewhere i might be tempted to go that bit extra!) The 23" R71 samsung was in fact the first set I looked at as I saw it on ebay going for £320. I thought that was an amazing price and I was willing to bid up to £375 for it but waited til the last minute and lo and behold when I put my bid in my computer froze up and the auction ended - it went for £320 as well so I was gutted!!! The cheapest I've found it online is around the £400 mark

i'd personally say that 16ms is a slow response time for games, you could experience ghosting which isn't pleasant, 8 or less would be ideal, or stay with CRTformerly mrmilo690

Hi Nintendosensei,
It's a small room and the CRT takes up quite a bit of room so I'm trying to save some space. I'll keep looking for something with a quicker response time for the moment! Thanks for the input.

Hi again everyone,
Ok I've found THIS 22" Mirai set with a response time of 6.5ms that seems to be made to double up as both an LCD Tv and a PC monitor. I've not really heard of the Mirai brand before but it seems to get good reviews - what do any of you experts think of this instead then? I can get it for around £300 but it seems to be sold out at a few sites too. Would I be better off with this or should I pay the extra and get the 23" Samsung or the 23" Philips (and hope the 16ms is ok)?
Regards
