Hi
I am sorry if this is in the wrong place, but old stylers are cat lovers - so I thought I'd ask this here.
I have a lot of cats in fact I breed raggies and maine coons and I need a new suite. HAs anyone got cats and a leather suite? I really feel that leather would be best for everything else, but I am worried about how it would stand up to claws.
I have heard that children's shoe buckles are bad - is there anything else I should be looking out for?
TIA

Hmm, my leather suite didn't stand up to the claws at all. Now I have one fabric and one leather and I have to say the fabric one is better. Probably smells a lot worse though! Nothing else has trashed it though.0

i have a second hand leather suite. Was great when bought 2nd hand new looking a week in our house with our 3 cats and they have destroyed one corner of the couch as a scratching post  leather and cats dont mix!Bad mother to 2!

I think I'm one of the fortunate ones - I had my Holly from 8weeks old (she's now 2), and she hasn't scratched the leather sofa at all - she even sleeps on a cushion on it. She has got a scratchy post and she uses a shrub outside to scratch on, so I guess she's learnt not to do it to the sofa.
Not sure about older cats if they can be trained not to do that though- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I have 2 leather settees and have always had a cat since I've has the settees.
Oddly enough none of the cats have clawed the settees - I think the smooth surface must put them off.
(My current cat has more of a thing for wallpaper!)0 -
I have one tiny scratch on the footstool of my suite but all in all my cat is very well behaved around the lounge furniture. I wish the same could be said for our bed. We rehomed her at age 2 though and she was quite well behaved from the moment we got her0

I have had my 2 leather sofas for a year now & my 3 cats have never bothered them at all, they always scratch on the fence posts in the garden, so i suppose they are used to scratching there, i usually keep a throw over the seating area of the sofas though cos they do get up on them, i also have 3 kids & i would never have a fabric sofa again, they are so much easier to keep clean!0

We had our leather sofa before we got our little cat. She has shown no inclination to scratch the sofa, but loves the rug on the floor. We don't stop her scratching this even though people go "Oh no, she's scratching the rug" cos that cost £50 as opposed to £1,500!! Plus, it doesn't seem to making any difference anyway.
BF always locks the kitty out of the lounge if no one is in the house, but she happily sleeps on it when we are watching telly.
If she did start scratching it, we would probably spray her with water or buy that cat repellant stuff you can buy.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

We had two kittens (now a year old) and a brand new leather suite. I feared the worsed but it was ok, they have caught it in a couple of places but nothing major and unnoticeable.
They have a scratching post, and love the rug which is a bound peice of carpet. they also love to scratch the corner of our bed!
Aslong as you have plenty of scratching posts you'll be fine. Our cats dont like to sleep on the couch unless thier blanket in on the seat, i guess the leather is cold!
Lemon juice is supposed to be a deterriant for cats so that may be of help at the start.
I locked my cats out of the lounge for the first few months and they soon got used to scratching esle where.Make £10 a day challenge March 2013 £101.24 / £240 :j

Oops, it would appear we have gone wrong somewhere!
Sofas, wardrobes, doors, tables, fences, rugs, curtains! Nothing is sacred. And they still use the scratchy post too, just to add insult to injury. They are banned from the living room but when we take pity on their crying at the door, they come in, look all cute and then we hear the horrible sound of the claws.
