Hi
I want to start to learn my way around stocks and shares and was thinking of starting a Halifax Sharebuilder account and making a monthly payment into it (maybe only £25 to £30 per month to start with).
I realise that shares are a long term investment and am quite happy to spend the time researching what shares to purchase.
Are there any better deals out there (Halifax is £1.50 per purchase)? Also any problems with what I'm thinking?
Details of Halifax Sharebuilder can be found at

Thanks in advance!

For small purchases, you cant beat sharebuider, most other brokers charge in excess of £7.50 per trade. Also for small amounts it only costs £5 to sell.
A disadvantage is there are only four trade dates a month and you have no control over when the order will be placed. However this should not be a problem if you are investing for the long term, and many fund managers only trade weekly (or even monthly) so you would be in good company.0 -
Thanks for that Tom.
I am intending to invest for the long term - I'm thinking maybe 10 years or so. I was also intending to decide which shares to purchase the day before one of the 4 trade days.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks.0 -
You need to make sure that you have cleared funds in the cash account the day before trade.
Dividends are reinvested, not that this is any bad thing. You only pay a small % on this. Im not sure if you can opt out of this since I dont.0 -

Excellent choice, your plan is a great way to learn about investing at low cost and without risking a lot of money until you get used to how it works.
Good luckTrying to keep it simple...0 -
Does anyone know if you can buy international shares through sharebuilder or would I just have to pay the £12 or whatever it is?
