bath or shower?

Options
My bathroom has a bathtub with power shower over bath. There is enough room to install a separate bath and shower, but involves moving toilet and basin. OH wants to do away with bathtub altogether and only have shower. We only use shower, but I'm worried this will be a bad thing, as on resale, people will want bath in preference to shower. Does having shower only significantly reduce value?

We bought a house with bath and independent shower, and removed the bath to have a large shower cubicle. To be honest, I miss a bath and it'll be a priority to have one in our next house. I'd say Keep it.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Most very young children will be bathed not showered - I couldn't imagine making my 2yr old stand in a shower and certainly for smaller children (that have outgrown a baby bath) you'd want some means of bathing them. That being the case it may not impact on the value but you'd rule out a tranche of the market - the lower demand may mean that you get less interest/offers and hence a lower price.

Have you thought of swapping the bath for a shower bath - these have a "pregnant" bit at one end which gives much more room to stand and have a shower (avoiding that cold shower curtain moment!). Adamsez do one that we had in our old house that we were very happy with and it meant we had decent showers but also somewhere to bath our son.

As a mom, there's no way I'd even rent a place that didn't have a bathtub. In fact, if I had to choose one or the other, I'd take a bathtub without a shower than the other way around. And, I also just like taking baths.

I wouldn't say it "significantly" reduces the value but it will put off a significant number of your potential buyers. The more serious ones will be calculating what it will cost to put the missing bath back in. If you can get a bath and separate shower cubicle in, then I'd go that route (but then I install them :D ).

My neighbour only has a shower and it's a nightmare getting her little girl to have a shower. Sometimes she uses a babybath for her - she's 7 years old!

I would try and keep both. Apart from anything else, you've got a back up if the shower breaks down.
  • I just had a shower in my first house.Had a job selling it because of that.

7 unanimous replies (and an 8th one here) should help! Bad idea - keep bath unless you've got another one in the house. When selling, a bath with shower over will beat a shower on its own, and if you can fit in a shower in addtion to the bath, the cost of moving the loo and basin should be paid for. Incidentally, is there any way you can get it in without moving the loo, as that'll be the biggest job?

Wish you lived around here and then I could get you to give an opinion about the ancient electric shower above our bath. It works but, it only has three settings and on the lowest "warm" I get hot water. My husband says "no problem what are you going on about". He just doesn't like the idea of having a new one and then having to have the bathroom completely retiled. The bathroom is downstairs (these houses as called chalet bungalows). The shower has just an on/off switch, a box over the gubbins, a useless shower head and a difficult tap. I maintain that we could get another, better quality, modern electric shower and if some tiles are destroyed as they will be we can do a fancy tile screen where all the new stuff is and that blends in.
What do you think of that idea? I'd really like a power shower but one bloke came and said "ooh no luv, that's a big job, that is" .

Apologies for highjacking the thread but the word shower just gets me going these days. To the original poster I'd say keep the bath for prospective purchasers.
