We've had a fake one the last couple of years. I do love the smell of a real tree but I'm not keen on the mess and watering it every day.

We always use real trees, they are the most environmentally friendly as they are from sustainable plantations. And they are fully recycled.

However, in MSE terms the real trees cost more

Ive had the same fake tree for 15 years now, and i still think it looks good!!!! Also with young children around, i think its prob a bit safer and a lot less mess.
  • i cant think that its more ethical to have a new tree evry year rather than a fake tree which you use for years and years and years. think about all the waste real trees make in january. most people tip them. i have a 4ft fakie which cost me £2 at my first christmas in my own flat, 3 years ago. :)

Environmentally speaking, real is the way to go : costs nothing in production, is carbon neutral during it's life span & can be either chipped afterwards or even if dumped it will naturally compost & not take up landfill, plus they come for sustained plantations.

That said, a fake one is much cheaper.

I suppose the ideal one would be a living potted tree just brought indoors & very carefully treated for 3 days in a cool room like a conservatory, then back outdoors & kept fed & watered until next year.

  • This year my local nurseries is offering to deliver and set up real trees, from sustainable sources, and then will come and pick up the tree after 12th night and make it into mulch stuff. I think I am going to give this a go, as I love real trees but have been put off by the disposal issue in the past.

Thankyou Lillibet - for years I had a fake tree cos I hated the idea of killing a tree. Then I was persuaded that they would have had to be taken out anyway cos they are grown to be cropped not as a forest. For the past few years we have had a real tree and I have to say that I have loved it. I just feels so much better and last year no needles dropped at all:j It is one cost that I am prepared to bare.

Definately a real tree for us.

    Love going and choosing one.

The smell of a real tree is christmas for me.

We are finding it harder to find places that sell good quality trees though.

    That arn't more than £25.00.

I am getting in the festive mood now.
