Saltpetre - Where Can I get it?

I'm a bacon addict but can't afford the good stuff and don't like the taste of the cheap stuff so I'm going to attempt to make my own.
The recipe does say that it can be omitted but as this is a first attempt I'd rather stick to the recipe exactly.
Does anyone have any good ideas where I can get saltpetre from please?

Downsizer is about to publish an article on basic bacon curing - I'll pop the link up here once it's up (problems with the pics are all that's holding us back).
It's written by a B&B owner who makes it regularly for her guests and it sounds scrummy. And I'm a vegetarian!0 -
Thanks for that, I found a recipe for it on the River Cottage site and the basic principle sounds so easy. I just have to get a huge quantity of belly pork now.

Moggins, this might be one of the versions you saw, as Alison, who wrote it, is also a poster on River Cottage. Hope it helps anyway - good luck with the bacon, hope you find some nice pork.0 -
Thanks everyone, I eventually found a 1lb bag for £6.99 on a sausage making website (LOL). I ordered it yesterday and it was delivered this morning so that was incredibly good delivery.
I spoke to my local butcher and he is getting in a large piece of belly pork for me, he even said he will hunt for the very best piece for what I am going to do.
It just goes to show how important building a good relationship with your local butcher is, I asked him for 1/2 lb belly pork this afternoon to make some pate, he mixed some loin in with it, minced it all up for me (it was more like a full pound after that) and charged me the grand price of 50p.
Sorry I digress, but it's been a really good day for meOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some Salt Peter?
Want to try my hand at home curing ham.
Have tried the local shops but no one seems to stock it?
Any ideas?0 -
