Murco biodiesel, anybody tried it ?

Options
A mate at work told me today that a local Murco garage is selling biodiesel @ 72p/litre. Has anybody tried it ? He reckons that the exhaust smells a bit different, sweeter maybe, shades of chip pan oil ?
I'm a bit reluctant to try it myself as my T.D.I. is only 3 months old and I don't want to do anything that is likely to do any damage. Anybody know if there's a B.S. spec for bio or anything like that so I can compare to what I can dig out from the handbook ?

  • I would also suggest you check your warranty, Ford I think preclude bio diesel, where as Volvo approve. Not 100% cerain, but would recommend you check your warranty booklet or handbook. Failing that, I would call the main importers and ask them, i.e. VW UK, Ford etc.

Would be interested to know where the garage is. Thanks.

We have a similar dilemma with our new Toyota...

I called Toyota and they said that using a blend with more than 5% biodiesel will invalidate the warranty.

5% veggie oil in the diesel is the norm for 'BioDiesel'.
I believe that all French Diesel is biodiesel, where the veggie oil is blended in at the refineries. The UK governemt are trying to encourage UK refineries to do the same, but who knows when that'll happen. If you search for webpages on 'veggie oil' then you'll find a lot more info, even that some manufacturers recommend biodiesel, as it adds a lubricant (in the vegetable oil) to the fuel.
  • Have a check but I think VAG do not allow the use of Biodiesel in TDI's, especially PD versions which yours will be if it's that new...

  • I wouldn't believe 72p /lt as a pump price from a reputable garage either.

Check for yourself before going further.

  • Spoke to the geezer who put me in the picture about this last Tuesday. He said that he had filled up that weekend and was chatting to the garage proprietor who had informed him that "It will be going up next week".
The inference was that it was a Murco decision and not down to Browns attempts to save us all from climate change.
