First Direct £10 monthly banking fee (merged)

Hi,
I've received a letter today stating that from next year I would be charged a £10 a month banking fee, as I don't pay £1500 a month in to my account and I don't have any other services with them.
I have my wages paid in but they only come to around £1000 a month, I heard about this on this site a few months ago but I thought they had decided not to bring in the charges so I was a bit surprised.
I've just applied for a credit card with them (which I don't really want) so I will avoid the fees, otherwise I would have switched to A&L.
Has anyone else received a letter about this?
Julie

Well well well ...
Like you - I thought this had died a death. Guess we were wrong.
Welcome to the land of fee-charging, yet completely standard, current accounts everyone.

I think it's to do with the fact that first direct have UK call centres, must cost them a lot to run...
I switched away from first direct a couple of months ago because I thought the monthly charges might come in after all ......Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
We now have NOTHING paid into ours, and it has a balance of £46! Haven't had the letter yet though.....
We'll be closing the account then.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Errr...so does this trend mean that people like my husband and I who don't have £1500 a month coming in, have current accounts which are virtually never overdrawn and only have one credit card which we pay off in full on the rare occasions it is used, will have to pay £10 a month for the bank to use our money, whereas people who have £1500 a month and live on their overdraft won't?
Where is the justice in that???(AKA HRH_MUngo)

I thought this issue had gone away with FD, apparantly not which is a shame, as even if I did use it as my wage account, it wouldn't be credited with £1500 each month.

I was in the same situation, and they wrote to me saying they were closing my account for me.0 -

In practice, you just need to transfer some money from FD to another bank, and then back into FD.0 -

No, you're paying the cost of your own banking if you choose to stay with First Direct and don't meet their selection criteria.
Or is your argument that others should subsidise the cost of your banking by having their money unlawfully taken from them and not returned?
There is really no reason why anyone needs to pay monthly charges. There are plenty of free current accounts and this situation will remain while there is competition.0 -
I'll be closing my accounts with them; they've been dormant for a few years now anyway.Happy chappy0
