Problem transfering from camcorder to pc "Glitches"

Options
Sharp VL-Z1H camcorder.
Cheap firewire installed and recognised by winxp.
When i start transfering footage from the cam to the pc a very nasty noise can be heard + multicoloured squares at regular intervals, Glitches and i think dropped frame.
I tried suggestions but no luck.
Is't the firewire or may be the camcorder or my computer?
Any similar experience you might went through ?
Any suggestion or advice?
Thanks

  • Ideally you dont want anything else running , including the following.

    The internet.
    virus killers.
    spam/adware killers.
    Downloads etc.
drive imaging or indexing including ms fastfind.
Other unused hardware , especially ones that are already capture devices like webcams.

You want to make sure that irq sharing (if possible) isnt running on that device and say vga or sound , and that overclocks arent involved on any of the hardware.

I suspect that the firewire card is just not up to the task , the processor or memmory. To have a decent video (pc) machine (not a mac) you need xp ,2ghz processsor , 512mb min ram , fast and defragged ntfs hd (ideally dedicated scratch hd)and decent spec overall.Make sure your drivers for all are up to date.

There will be less specced pcs RAN by advanced users doing it well , but the average joe doesnt do what they do regularly or buys cheaper hardware , or optimise what they already have for that matter.

Theres plenty of dedicated forums on digital video , youd get a better and more indepth help on one of them , but avoid the maccers only ones , pah!

Many thanks for your support and help.
To clarify things my computer is 1 year old, Athlonxp2500, 512mb.....etc.
I installed a fresh copy of xp in my H.D second partition without installing or running any further software other than the O.S, this way you can make sure that the problem is not from any software, H.D ....etc.
    Same problem occured.

The firewire is sharing the irq(16) with my Realtek Ethernet and it appears(in the device manager) under the "Network adapters" beside the Realtek Ethernet with the name "1394 Net Adapter" whitch surprise me a bit seeing "net adapter" but there is no way to change the irq from there so I tried and desinstalled the ethernet adapter this way there won't be more sharing. Still no luck.

I'm afraid i have to buy another card to see if there is any luck left.

    Many thanks again
  • 1394 firewire is often classed as a network device , although dont let it share an irq with another.Your spec should be fine , so realistically the problem lies not with that at all.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for everything , including the camera if needed. And the motherbaord ide driver too.I think you suspect its the cheap firewire , try another slot to make sure.

Check for an update to your software for video editiing/grabbing.
