  • hi, is he a veggie or a vegan? im veggie and we eat eggs, vegetraians dont eat animal flesh products, vegans dont eat or use any animal products. if hes a veggie he can eat most of teh stuff teh other guy can but if hes vegan you can get dairy and egg-free cakes/biscuits etc. at any health food shop or most big supermarkets, you can also get gelatin-free sweets there (though chewits, liquarice (except pontefract cakes) and dunhil kids mixtures are gelatin-free anyway!). you can still give him beer unless hes tee-total.

Do you have a Holland and Barrett near you, or something similar?
There would be a good selection of things in there.

I'm a veggie as well, and would recommend dried fruit, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds etc. which she could either have as snacks, or use in cooking.

    Green and Blacks chocolate?

Or, you could just play it safe and put some smellies in there, providing they aren't tested on animals!!!

Things are quite well labelled these days, so I guess it's just a case of reading the labels to check.
  • No hes not a vegie she is, and yes she is a vegan, will get him beer, but wanted to get them some really nice food for christmas that they would not normally buy. Very ignorant on this type of thing so I am tyring hard not to offend her.
    Thans very much

Groceries that are vegetarian are generally marked with a v symbol so you could look for this. However this could still mean that there are eggs in the product so you will also have to read the ingredients I'm afraid. I'm veggie and some things I would like that should be safe include:
    vegetable crisps (Tyrells etc)
xmas pudding (don't think these have egg in!)
halva, eastern med sweet stuff but does have honey in so depends how strict she is (get from health food shop) - edited to add don't buy anything with honey in if she is vegan!
dried fruit and nuts - pistachios, cashews etc

I would say look on the organic and free from shelves in Sainsburys or another supermarket, have a browse in Holland and Barrett or a local health food shop Also most chocolate should be ok (assuming she eats some dairy - edit: she doesn't so just dark chocolate) but jelly type sweets are to be avoided. If buying alcohol some wines are labelled veggie or you could just buy organic or local stuff (cider) etc.
  • since i found out i cant eat wheat any more im really into nuts and seeds, and a dried fruit snack called 'la fruit' which you can get in holland and barrett and tesco, its lovely! also, ive been thinking, how about:

*some shelled nuts and a nutcracker?
*dried cranberries or another seasonal dried fruit?
    *carob (like choclate but dairy-free)
*smellies from somewhre like this: http://www.honestycosmetics.co.uk/index.shtml
    *liquirice juice sticks

    :)

  • How about some veggie pate. Like mushroom.
Put together a food kit like mediterranean coucous. Packet of plain couscous, jar of sundried tomatoes, some nice olive oil, garlic and dried mixed herbs. Then print out a recipe card of how to make the couscous.

Just another thought. I'm veggie and my OH is not. I don't buy meat so he relies on gifts like this and meals at friends and families to get his dead flesh fix. If you're buying for the guy perhaps he'd like some non veggie stuff anyway?

in asdas they a have vegetable pate by granovita at about 99p - lovely even for non veggies and the also do a dairy free parmazano by florenteno - these can be found the small veggie and whole food section (not fridge or frozen) Packets of good quality nuts are always good too.

oh yes Green and Black chocolate - available in most supermarkets - check the back of the bar for vegan suitable...with the other chocolates ........my daughter has been vegan for 2 yrs and it is nightmare at times Green & black also do a hot chocolate drink, there are two so again check the packet for correct vegan one found with other hot chocolate drinks.
