I have exhausted my search of the freebie anti-spam programs and havent found one that looks reliable enough. those that i give a maybe all seem to be too much like hard work in setting up.
Could all who have made the experience please advise which program is best and why?
I dont mind paying around 20 quid if its going to do the job
I mean an only payment of £20 and not an annual subscription if it exists that is.
Thanks in advance

I used to use Mailwasher, I haven't used it for a while but it was pretty good. i think there used to be a free version and a better version that you could pay for. Nowadays I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client which has a reasonable junk mail filter built in. If you haven't tried Thunderbird it may be worth looking at to see if meets your requirements as it's free. It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends

I use MailWasher to check and delete all unwanted email on the servers before I download any email to my computer. That way you can get rid of any spam+attachments before it gets near your PC. The last freeware version (1.33) is available here:
http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page2.html
MailWasher 1.33 allows you to check multiple email accounts if you have more than one. I check five. More recent versions dont. It also lets you set up filters to tag emails for deletion. For example you can set up a filter so that if the spam is not directly addressed to you (e.g. gxtrdse@yourdomain.com instead of yourname@yourdomain.com) the email can be automatically tagged for deletion. It's not too difficult to set up and worth trying as its free.

I did a search like you recently, and decided to try spamihilator.
It uses various filters to determine what is spam. It also has a learning mode where you tell it what is and isn't spam. It's pretty user friendly and quite professional looking for a freebie. At the moment I'm still getting a few spam through, but it is catching a lot, and it is trapping some that isn't spam, but you can get those back easily enough.Charlie0 -

I'm sorry, I tried this one and frankly I am very p***ed off
It altered all my email settings. some of them I'm having trouble getting back.
I got a page came up but nothing is clear what to do next.
Either I'm being dumb or its very complicated to work withIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
Oh dear, I'm sorry you've had problems with it. That's the trouble with computers - what works great for one person, can be a pain in the a*** for someone else.
This page:
http://www.spamihilator.com/help/0.9.9/en/configclient.php
tells you how to configure spamihilator; maybe it will help you get your settings back to before (unless you have done a system restore).Charlie0 -
I use Coffee Cup Spam Blocker and find it easy to use very efficient and allows me to 'bounce' the spam back. I believe this indicates to the spam sender that my address is invalid and is therefore removed from spammers address listings.

I used to use Mailwasher on my old PC, this worked well and checked multiple email accounts. But now the latest free version has fewer features, and will only allow one account to be checked. The link cwoodham posted for Mailwasher seems to point to the latest version, if anyone coould point me to the old version that will be a big help to me! Thanks...0

The link is okay. I've just checked. Follow the link again and it should take you to the section marked Mailwasher at the top of the page. Then click Download (1563 kb) at the end of the piece on Mailwasher. This should start the download of mailwasher133.zip. Dont click the home page link to mailwasher.net just above it.
If you still have problems, pm me (dont know how this works but see its used here) and I'll send you a copy. HTH0 -

If you bounce spam it usually wont go back to the sender. Spammers always forge addresses in the FROM field of their spam emails.
I know because its happening to me. I'm getting bounced spam supposedly coming from myself as the spammers are forging my email address. A number of other people on this forum have experienced the same thing and have raised this point. Best just to delete the spam rather than bounce it.0 -
