Is it cheaper to boil water on the stove than in an electric kettle?

I saw on MSE that boiling a uses up LOTS of electricity. Would it be cheaper to boil the same amount of water in a pot using gas?

To boil an electric kettle of water will cost approx 1p.

Whist a pot on a gas cooker will be cheaper, is it really worth the effort?

I'm sure spomeone will work out the correct numbers on this, but it's always been my belief that if you have a gas hob, then that is a more efficient way of boiling water than an electric ring or electric kettle.

The reasoning is that electricity companies still produce the majority of their electricity through burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), then, through inefficient systems, lose some of their power output delivering it to your home, so this means there is always a mark-up on electricity over gas.

However, as the utilities fluctuate in price, then this need to be considered (hence the maths I'm not up to doing).

Just boiling only the amount of water you need will probably save you more money than worrying over which methos to use.

I switched to a stove top kettle about 6 months ago and have found it cheaper and quicker. You can also measure out your water and only boil a small amount if needed.

We switched to boiling water in a kettle on the gas hob after the electric kettle failed, works out cheaper to boil the water on the hob and won't have to keep replacing a failing electric kettle.
