Sunday day out by train from Manchester?

Want to go out for the day on Sunday but fancy leaving the car behind for a change. Was thinking that the train might be a nice, relaxing alternative- leave Manchester early Sunday morning, have a pleasant trip somewhere watching the world go by, then visit some town or other, check out a few interesting places, have some food/drink and come back to Manchester.
Thing is, not sure where to go to? Anyone got any suggestions?

why not visit the Hopevalley by train, go for a walk in Edale, Hope , Bamford, Hathersage, or Grindleford.You can catch the 272 between these villages which also goes to Castleton and Bradwell,I think they even do special day tickets which can be used on the train and bus as many times as you like(I'm not certain of this).0

Get off at Grindleford and go for lunch at Grindleford cafe - It does the biggest chip butties you've ever seen
Then you can walk it off along Padley gorge, the train drops you right by the walk so just walk over the railway bridge with the cafe behind you and follow the path to the right just over the bridge. A lovely senic walk through forest and along the rocky river.When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt

The cafe can sometimes be very busy but a lovely walk it is too. If possible try and catch the bus o Castleton then you and the kids can go down the caverns there which are really interesting.

Weelky Dales train in Summer stopping at all stations on the Settle Carlisle route is a must do with half price fares and graded walks included..may have to join in at Preston or Blackburn though..Watch out for some steam train outings too...0
