Being Scammed?

Recieved and banked a draft from National Irish bank for a car £6,000. NOT AN OVERPAYMENT, NOT RELEASED CAR. banked it yesterday and the money is showing on my account as balance BUT NOT YET AVAILABLE FUNDS. Have posted this on another forum asking whether a scam, I just need to know, if it is, will the draft actually clear at some point before it is found to be fake or stolen? Want to know how long to hold onto for before I release the car.
Thanks

Best thing to do is speak to your bank. It could be a scam but in all probability will be fine. But don't release the car until you have an answer from your bank.0

Bankers drafts now apparently have clearing times.
I wouldn't have thought it would clear if it was a fake. Was it paid in over the counter? I'd have thought counter staff would have spotted it it if was a fake.
But I'm no expert. My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
yes it was paid in over the counter. Just heard horror stories where they have cleared anyway and been spotted weeks to months later!0

Does anyone know how they check bank drafts? It is my understanding that as it is being paid by the bank that it shouldnt "bounce" due to insufficient funds, as they have loads in there suspense accounts! How does the clearing work, as with cheques they just check for available funds?0

A bankers draft, in theory, comes straight from the buyers account and is pretty much as good as money.
The bank won't authorise a bankers draft if there are insufficient funds, plus you often have to pay to get a bankers draft.
The bank draw the funds from the account when they make out the draft, so it's not like the buyer can overspend and have insufficient funds to dishonour the draft.
I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.
Then only way I see this coming back on you is if a fraudulent person requested the draft. And even then, it's the banks fault for improper verification. It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Sounds dodgy to me...
Did you receive the BD in the post? If so, why didn't the buyer just send you a normal cheque & wait for it to clear?
If it is a genuine buyer why not just draw out the cash to pay for the car upon collection?
Hope everything works out but I feel that you should proceed with cautionBetter to die on your feet than to live on your knees!0 -
Because a cheque can bounce, whereas a Real BD cannot bounce (unless it's a forgery). It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.
