Support as a disabled person

I have Cerebral Palsy and at the moment I am at uni and live at home. I do believe I will be entitled to disabled living allowance and maybe tax credits as a disabled person. Any advice that could offered would be welcome

Great site, your uni should have a benefits advisor who should be able to advise you on how studying effects benefits aswell.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

My uni didn't have a benefits advisor, I was told I had to go to an outside agency for it.

I'm not sure about IB as I'm on SDA, but income support you can still get depending on what rate you're assessed at. Basically, take your student loan, deduct about £600 which is the allowance for books and tavel (I'm not sure what this years exact figure is) then £10 a week. It's spread over 42 weeks (summer you're entitled to full IS). If this leaves you with less than the IS level you'd be on, they pay the difference.

DLA no problem, you're entitled to that whether student, working or unemployed.

Also look into Disabled Students Allowance, the assessment isn't like it is for benefits it's all about what you need. I got a laptop, minidisc recorder, ergonomic mouse and keyboard, and an allowance for general help in the library etc. There's also a chance of getting notetakers.

    Good luck!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • To get tax credits Phil..you need to work 16 hours per week (and get dla and have a disability that puts you at a disadvantage of getting a job)...unless of course you have a child (which is unlikely!!!)
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

I know I have to be earning something taxable to have credits on, but in the near future I hope that is the case.

Why does DLA put you at a disadvantage of getting a job?

    Cheers!!!

I did claim DSA and the equipment that was funded through that has made a great different.
    Thanks!
