N Power Sign on Line Tariffs

I'm on Sign on Line 4 for electricity. NPower wrote to me to advise price increases from 1/10 ( to 20.74p and 8.97p in my area). I decided to do some comparisons and found that their current tariff Sign on Line 6 was cheaper than 4 (at 17.85p and 8.08p inc vat). So I called them and asked them to move me on to the new tariff. I was told I needed to change providers and then come back to NPower as a new customer. I was not impressed and said that I had no wish to buy my electricity from a company which disadvantaged its existing customers especially as I wanted to move my gas to NPower (the carrot!) I asked to speak to supervisor and was then told that I go onto NPower website and choose Switch option. Under existing provider, leave blank and then tariff will change to current tariff. Unfortunately I missed my £15 cashback but it was a battle won.

Have you got confimation that you have been accepted onto the new SOL tariff? It sounds like a really nice loophole, but it all seems just a little too easy.

I just have a system-generated acknowledgement so far. I will let you know when the paperwork arrives. If it doesn't work I will vote with my feet!

Sounds like a great loop hole if this is really possible.
  • Have also tried this myself last night.
At same stage as OP (received my auto response).
If this doesn't work, I'm moving elsewhere.

Got my letter today and they have confirmed the new rates. You have to add on the vat to check but all seems OK. I guess I'll lose my discount for the year so far but the clock now resets for £60 dual fuel rebate unless they upset me again which will probably happen the way prices are going.
  • Same here now.
Got my new rates, but guess I'll move away from them before the £60 dual fuel discount pays out, as they're working the "new customers only" prices a bit too enthusiastically for me.

    See this thread for details:-

  • Having tried to change from npower's v4.03 tariff to the cheaper v6 one, I've come against a brick wall, quote:-

"We have checked our records and discovered that we are already the supplier of your gas & electricity, therefore we have DELETED the contract you recently entered into with us.

Please be assured this does not affect your existing npower account"

So there you have it, proof that cheaper tariffs are for "new customers only".

Not sure whether to complain, will it get me anywhere, or just get on my bike & move?

    As another poster posted:-

"On quizzing npower they were very reluctant to shed any light on this. But they confirmed that if you switch to them you get energy at a cheaper rate than existing customers. Then it seems that after a short period of time the new customer's prices are increased to (almost) the existing customer's prices."
  • Hi - you are right. The same thing happened to me a week ago. I went mad! The bottom line is that i have been offered a goodwill gesture of £30 (which I have taken on my gas account!) and I moved electricity immediately. They've also just lost my company's £20k account which I was going to give them.

I tried this, but it didn't work!

I received a letter from Npower last week saying that noticed I was already a npower customer, so the new application was cancelled. Looks like I am stuck on SOL4 prices.

I too have discovered that the Sign online 7 tariff is cheaper than the standard npower one I am on - and is the cheapest in my area (Kent)- and if my calculations are correct, should save me just over £100 each for gas and electricity.

I called npower to ask if I could switch over (I had not read this or other threads on the topic at the time) and was told that I could switch only by switching away from npower and then back. I was told that 28 days notice is required each time, so in theory I should set up the switch and when I receive confirmation of the date of the switch, should then immediately set up a switch back (i.e. straight away, rather than waiting for the date of the switch) - this time with Sign Online, meaning that I would only be with the new provider for a few days.

As my £60 dual fuel discount was paid in November, now would be the time to do it - or wait until next Nov.

The £200 savings assume that the signonline rate stays lower than the standard rate - but my concern from reading this and other threads is that the gap would close between them, making it a waste of time

    Has anyone tried this?

Do you think it is worth the potential hassle?
