pirate costume for a 6 year old

Options
DS has come home from school tonight with a letter saying its book week next week so on friday they can all go dressed as pirates for the day. costume needs to be wearable and easy for him to go toilet etc by himself. I want to make rather than buy (most of his class mates have working mums who will just get the childminder to nip into the disney store and pick a ready made one) i think he has visions of going in loking like jack sparrow. Other problem is grandma will be dressing him and taking him to school that day as me and his dad are sneeking off for an already booked night away

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please. I have a sewing machine that i can use. I hope ive put this in the right thread.

There was a thread about this before, we went on a camping rally in the summer and the Sat afternoon was a Pirate afternoon. Adults and kids dressed up, use an old t shirt - cut it into a large square to make a bandana. Cut out a sword from cardboard and cover with tin foil unless you already have a toy sword. You could cut off and fray or make ragged some old trousers. Maybe an eye patch as well?

I think I've got some pirate patterns somewhere - Butterick or similar. I'll have a look tomorrow and PM you if I can find them. You'd be welcome. I've also got a pirate skull bandana!

If you need accessories asda have pirate stuff with the childrens party invites and stuff, pirate swords, eyepatches etc around 99pfor most bits. would be okay to add to your home made costume.

I made a pirate costume using an old blouse of mine which had a lacy collar and nice full sleeves, but you could use an old man's white shirt and roll up the sleeves. Then I made a red felt waistcoat - just the seams to sew no finishing of edges. It was a basic tunic pattern without sleeves which was open all down the front. Cross the fronts and keep it in place with an old black belt.

I also made some short trousers from curtain lining material I had left over using a pattern for some pyjama trousers and ran elastic through the hems so that they looked like breeches. Then a pair of girls knee length white socks and some silver foil to make buckles to stick on the front of school shoes. I bought a pirates three cornered hat and a sword. The whole thing only took two hours.

    Hope this helps

Primark are selling "dress for bed" pj's, including a pirate set. You get stripy trousers and a printed top, and it came with a bandana, eye patch and a dagger. They cost £4 and my son loves his. Your son can wear them as pj's afterwards.

For the sake of £4 it's not worth the time and money buying bits to make a costume, unless you really have a point to prove.
Here I go again on my own....

Gosh that sounds a bit judgemental and as a working Mum I take a bit of offence at that. I go to Disney myself thanks, no childminder here for errands.

Back to the costume - a head scarf, a sword from Poundland, an old white shirt and you should be sorted.

Oh and the ToyZone shop at the Outlet Centre is where I really buy costumes - I can't sew and I don't have a creative bone in my body so I leave that for those who can

Its easy. Amputate your childs left leg at the knee and right hand at the wrist, replace with some mediaeval prosthetics, and there you have it, a pirate costume.
Unfortuneately the costume is kind of permanent.
