  • make sure you thoroughly rinse your hair, even when you think its clear, rinse it once more, then rinse in vinegar and rinse thoroughly again. also, to stop the irritation of the dandruff, don't towel rub near your scalp too much.

If Head & Shoulders etc aren't doing anything for it, it's possible that he doesn't have dandruff at all - but something that looks like it. He might need a trip to the GP to get it sorted.

I would comment though that most (maybe all) those anti-dandruff shampoos contain quite strong chemicals - usually something like sodium laurel sulphate (I think that's what it is called...refered to as SLS) which are designed to strip oil away from the scalp. They are a known irritatant...crazy isn't it...yet they are found in the majority of soaps and shampoos available! He might be very sensitive to that chemical and his skin is going crazy trying to replace what the chemicals remove. There are SLS free shampoos and conditioners out there - not the cheapest though... I use some from https://www.greenpeople.co.uk which is very good. I expect your local health food shop would have something on their shelves to offer.

I hope this isn't construed as medical advice - it's not meant to be!! Just saying what worked for me - I know the torture of it, so hope that this helps.

Get it treated with a small 60mlbottle of Nizoral. It disappears amazingly quickly and will never return. Ask for it at a chemist.

I don't have a home remedy but when I was still working dandruff was the bane of my life. In my experience:

    1. its much worse when you are stressed, so pay attention to stress levels
    2. it helps to shampoo every day with a mild shampoo (not a medicated one). I found if the scalp got at all greasy, it itched, which made me scratch, which made the flakes worse, but shampooing washed away loose flakes and kept scalp clearer
    3. my favourite shampoo is Sunsilk anti-itch shampoo, which works really well for me
    4. since giving up work to be SAHM, it has gone completely (see 1 above)!

Hope some of this helps - I appreciate that no 4 may not be an option though...

I had it bad for years. The only thing that worked for me was the Elvive anti-D (very pricey by my standards). I then switched to Boots essentials shampoo and conditioner (500ml 69p each and BOGOF!) and all has been clear. Great stuff. I think the key is that it is very mild for every day use

I might be a little late for this but my Trade Secrets book says in the hairdressing section that a little olive oil in the conditioner will make it anti-dandruff!:D

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!
