somethings changed ...sure it happened the same day i've installed service pack 2 to xp on my dell inspiron laptop.......
if i was going away from my laptop for a few minutes ... for security i would just close the lid ..... i would hear the fans stop ......
and when i returned when i open the lid the fans would start and the screen would light up .. and there would be my windows password login page .i'd just put in password and then it would take me to the main desktop page with all the program icons.
what's happening now is when i re-open the lid the fan starts but the screen stays black .... all i can then do is press the on/off button for about 10 seconds which shuts it down and then press it again to start the computer up again.
i've tried looking at .... start...power options....advanced.... "when close lid"... shows standby ... can't see anything else that can change /rectify
Any ideas ??
thanks

Hiya,not too sure if you have actualy altered the options or just looked at them after reading your post , but anyway these are what they should be for what you want, you need to go to control panel -->power options --> advanced. Then tick 'prompt for password when computer returns from standby' and also the section that says ' when I close the lid of my personal computer' drop down and change to ' stand by', click apply, and thats it.Official member of the BB B*tches club. no 2 B*tch.

SP2 download has a glitch in it. Do a system restore to a date before you downloaded SP2. Then go to Microsoft website and order the CD (free, inc free P&P). It will arrive in a a few days and you can install SP2 from there without it messing up your settings. PC world also had a stock of the CDs in, but that was a while ago, not sure if they still have them.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

i did the sp2 download only 7 days ago from a disc that i'd ordered and just received from microsoft . There are no further updates on the microsoft download system so i'm as up to date as i can be.0

Its a puzzle for sure! as you have it set right. Have you tried going on the microsoft site, and asking the question in one of their forums? It can be quite helpful reading some of those!Official member of the BB B*tches club. no 2 B*tch.

Its a possibility that your machine may simply have begun to overheat and hang as a result....I had a laptop running win2k that used to do a similar thing before it was replaced, its purely random. The SP2 installation may just be coincidence.
Just see, is it extremely hot when it occurs,...check where the memory is located and also around and underneath where the power lead connects to it. Try leaving it powered on for an extended duration instead of closing the lid and see if it overheats possibly.
What I have found is dont leave it on the charger when it doesnt need charging as it continues to heat some machines. Generally speaking, if a laptop is fully charged, the battery should be removed when running of the mains to prolong the battery life. The fans inside laptops over time collect a mass of dust. It is simply inevitable and as a result the cooling ability reduces slightly, hence overheating.
Heat = a laptops enemy...Beware Lego Men with Deep pockets...! :cool:0 -
and Sony, with SP2 I notice that Toshiba have rafts of new drivers for SP2. This seems to suggest that the power management in SP2 has changed hence the problems, check with your vendor Dell for updated drivers.Seth.0
