Can someone help me to secure my wireless network as I have a snooper in the area!
How can I WEP Enable It? I have tried to enter words and numbers for the hexidecimal 'code' and entered it into the router and pc. This did not work.
I currently have mac filtering on but would like to make it more difficult for poaple to access my network.
Any suggestion would be great.

what router make is it? when you say you have tried entering words/numbers how do you know that hasn't worked, are you picking a long enough code(32 characters, I think?)0

I would like to know also. I have Origo 7210 modem/router. I can set either 64 or 128bitkey lengths and I have the choice of 6 channels with 10 letters/numbers in each. If I choose one of them how do I configure the computer to read this channel? I tried going into the receivers properties>advanced and I can tick WEP enable. If I do so the key lengths are 5 and 13 charactors. I seem to be stuck and I am loath to experiment incase i am locked out.
Just found out I can change to hexadecimal 10charactors. If I put the same numbers in both the router and receiver(copy/paste) will they both talk to each other ok?Down south where, unfortunately, the government does remember us.0 -
yes, you will need to enter the key on each of the computers that are going to be using your network.
Just to let you know that if someone really wants into your network then it doesnt take that long to get the key either, there are plenty of tools for doing it.
Another thing you should do is hide your ssid, I know that this doesn't make that much of a difference but it means that people have to actually be looking for your network to find it.The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.0 -
I'm tempted to tell that to 'belkin54g' who got a new wireless router for christmas somewhere near me0

WEP isn't that hard to break (particularly 40bit). If your router and OS supports WPA (XP Sp2 I think is needed) then that is much more secure.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

HI Injk,
Simplest but very secure method is a combination of the 3 basic methods---wep it, hide SSID, MAC filter. At the end where you have the IP address range (eg: 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200) change the second one the first plus exactly the number of WIRELESS PC's that you have ---so for 3 W'less PC's change to 192.169.0.103.
This way the system cannot give this snooper another IP address---even if he has broken in thur all that--so he cant log on.
And lastly, chnage the default passowrds----somehow--if he logs in----he can't change the setting if he wants.
BASic---but pretty secure.0 -
Sorry to sound a bit thick, but whats WPALooking to raise some money0

The best way is through seeting the filter up in the router depending on your router make enter into the configuration and somewhere you will see the settings for access or filter (you will need to check with your manual router exactly where the options are.
Then in the MAC filter check Only allow computers with MAC address listed below to access the networkk then add the MAC address of the computers you have networked.
Then nobody outside these MAC addresses can access2008 Wins Jan Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey: The Definitive Edition on HD DVD £12.98, £10 amazon voucher, £10 amazon voucher, £10 amazon voucher,£500 love2shop voucher, £10 amazon voucher, dvd and chocolate £8.12, Portable dvd player + town called eureka boxset £126Total £687.100 -
