Hi off to the big apple in a few weeks to celebrate my big birthday!!!
We have booked to see a musical on Broadway but that's it so far. We have flights and accomodation (fairly central but it is expensive there isn't it!!) but want to know what you experts (or anyone who has been there before) thinks.
I don't like heights at all and I think I might freak a bit up the Empire state building or will it be ok??? Any ideas???
Any places to shop or eat you thought were must do's??
There are 3 couples for most of the time we are there (Thurs to Mon) and no kiddies (wot a treat!).
Thanks for all your info
ps I know there are other threads on NYC many of which I have studied but just want to know what people would really recommend so I can get some more ideas thanks!

Empire State Building really is a must do - I too am a hater of heights but loved it - have done it in the day and the night and must admit the day was better for me.
Must do is the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island - do it earlish as the queues and security are heavy.
A ride thru Central park in a horse drawn carriage is fab - as is shopping in Macy's - leave the boys in the bar in the basement.
A trip to ground Zero - breath taking and very hunbling.
Century 21 - bargain store
Ice skating Central Park / Rockerfella Centre is the rink is ready
FrozzEN Hot Chocolate in Serendipity's is superb!!
Times square is good but very very busy.
Have fun

Do the Circle Line boat trip around Manhattan. It takes you right past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, under Brooklyn Bridge, past Yankee Stadium etc etc. A great way to see the city, and not too expensive.0

go on one of the bus tours - quite cheap and a good way of seeing thoughts of the sights, you can get on & off or just do a circular trip. The tour guides are great and really funny.
There is a great restaurant on top the the Marriot restaurant in time square, it revolves! Food and service were excellent, went there for early dinner then theatre which made it a special evening. They also do a buffet, but not tried that. It feels a bit strange at first as you're moving around, but you soon get used to it.
The Rockafellar centre top floor - I preferred it to the Empire State building. Don't worry about the hight of either, it was ok.
Some good comedy stores as well, we got the hotel Concierge to recommend one and they gave us some free tickets as well...if only I could remember what it was called, but sure most of them will be fine. They also recommended a nice Italian down near China Town (!) Pellegrinios 138 Mulberry Street, between Mester & Grand St. doesn't look much from outside but food was good.
infact - hotel concierges are great, if yours isn't just try someone elses! We stayed at The Westin New York, times square...they would never know if you were staying there or not (esp if you go up the escalator from the entrance via the cinema on 42nd/43rd Street. They gave great recommendations esp restaurants and can get you booked in even when there aren't spaces. They gave us their card to show incase we got stuck - for reference it was Gabriela Popeti if you want to mention her name (went earlier this year so she's probably still there)
didn't think much of the horse carriage ride in central park, but it is a touristy thing to do.0 -
just a quick word about the emp.state bdg.
you won't go right to the top. you hit floor 86. still high enough for me to feel a little nervous.
make a point of checking the weather on the day. poor visibility and you won't experience the full benefit of your vantage point.
and prepare to queue.
a pleasant trip.
forgot to add the staten island ferry. best view of stat.liberty. and it's free!miladdo0 -
Just to add to the others, you must pop over to Brooklyn Heights...Over the Brooklyn Bridge basically. From there you get the famous view of Manhatton that appears in just about every film and programme of New York.
If you come off of the bridge, turn right along the path by the water and there are a load of seats, have a sit and take in the view, its lovely!
If you go close to dusk then you will get the daytime view, but sit through it and you will see the lights come on across in Manhatton and see it from a whole different perspective.
Also, if you want to have a little explore while you are there, then there are plenty of very nice restuarants close by, particularily a nice Greek one, which for the life of me I can't remember but if I do Ill pop back!
Of course 5th Avenue is another must for shopping...0 -
Must do's:
Knicks: (even if you don't like basketball it's very fun!) Tickets start at $10 each so it can be pretty cheap.
Be in a tv show audience: You can get tickets for free by contacting the show you'd like to see. Letterman is a good one as he always has top guests. It's a good free night out.
Visit the original pizzeria: lombardis Good pizza and you can say you went to the original pizzeria (if you like that sort of thing!)0 -
Hi,
Staten Island ferry is free, see the skyline.
Ellis Island is good, Statue of Liberty on same ferry can be heaving.
Buy a pastrami on rye and a coffee and go and sit in Cental Parka and people spot.

personally Id recommend:
Empire State building
Macys
Time Square
Century 21
Central Perk-walking and ice skating
Stock Exchange
Sea Port area
Bloomingdales
Crysler building
Tiffanys
As you can tell, the places to go are tha places that are the most famous. Its such an amazing place New York. Im contemplating going around the first week in Decemeber, although i know it will be freezing! I went April and it was soo cold then!
Once your there, its all just like watching a film. police sirens going, people whistling for cabs, yellow cabs, dohnut sellers on street corners, more yellow cabs, traffic lights blowing in the wind, steam rising from the grids on the road.
I loved the place and can only imagine what its like at Christmas time there. If anyone knows of any good deals going then please let me know!0 -
I would recommend the New York Pass which gives you free entry to over 40 attractions in New York plus discounts on food- This includes the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Central Park zoo and most of the musuems, the Cirlce Line sight seeing boats/ferrys that the previous poster suggested etc.
Heres the website : http://www.newyorkpass.com/index2.asp
We definately saved money using it and it allows you to bypass the queues (very useful as there was a 30 minute wait to get to the empire state building!)!
We also went to 'Top of Rock' at the top of the rockefeller centre and really recommend it! You have views of the Empire State building and Central Park. We also found this a lot quieter and more romantic than the Empire state building!Dont worry about the height- they have stone walls and bars (probably to stop people commiting suicide off the top!) and I felt very safe and Im afraid of heights!
Definately have a walk around Times Square- You might see some celebs! and seeing as the pound to the dollar is strong- I would recommend shopping!
Oh and theres a open market along the avenue starting from Central Park every sunday, where you can get different types of food, cheap clothes, souvenirs etc. I would recommend the smoothies- you can choose what fruit you put in and its huge for $2! I cant remember what the avenue is called but it ran from the rockefeller centre to central park so you can't miss it!
I could go on and on- I love NY!Competition Challenge 2007 - Win your internet fees back in prizes = £349.87/£1560 -
Wow you guys are fonts of NYC knowledge, I am getting sooo excited reading these posts and think I will manage the Empire State building from what you have been saying!
THANKS!0
