my brother is thinking of going to work in bristol but still living in the midlands. this would mean a daily commute to get to work. he says a yearly train ticket is about £4,000 per year!!!!
does anyone know a cheaper way of getting this rail ticket, or any other bright ideas to help him out???
we'd be really greatful.

  • You don't say where in the midlands but I doubt if there's a cheaper way of doing it.

How about renting a room in Bristol 5 nights a week and travelling home at weekends / days off if he doesn't want to move there?

Will his employer let him work at home, at least some of the time?

Incidentally, British Rail was privatised about ten years ago. Virgin Trains now carry passengers between Bristol and the Midlands.

£4000 sounds a lot but it's the going rate for millions who commute into London. It works out about £80 per week which wouldn't get you much of a room in Bristol.
Some employers will give interest-free season ticket loans, otherwise it can be got interest-free by buying on a credit card and then doing a balance transfer to a 0% one.
Unfortunately working from home 1-2 days per week wouldn't save any money.
    Can I help?

My annual ticket is 3196 and my employer does not pay for it.
For me, I get a credit card with 10 month interest free period and used it for the ticket.
