Sony W50 digital camera or Casio Z600?HELP

I'm goning to buy a digital camera, I've waited long enough and want to get in before Christmas prices come in. My options are;

Sony W50
2.5" LCD
6 megapixel
3x optical zoom
etc.

It has more internal memory and a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar Lens (good thing?) but needs funny memory sticks and I have SD cards coming out my ears.

On offer for £122.88 from amazon

"OR"

Casio EX-Z600
2.7" LCD
6 megapixel
3X OPTICAL ZOOM
etc.

It has the emotional appeal for me, it has a bigger LCD screen and is slightly smaller (i really want a small one), takes SD cards, but its a casio!

Price inc discounts: £134.99 from jessops

I know people say you cant really trust casio cameras but this is quite highly rated by both cameras.co.uk (scored 82) and steves digi-cams, he rates it as one of the best out of the 6-10 mexapixel range on his "Best Cameras" bit.

So I need help to decide, has anyone got either of these cameras? Had any problems with them? Or just give me some good advice, I really need it because I'm so indecisive! I've been looking for a camera since early may, meant to be part of my b'day gift - my birthday is the 6th may!! - please help

  • Note that the Sony has a viewfinder - useful in bright sunshine when LCDs can be difficult to use. Turning off the LCD and using the viewfinder instead also saves drain on the battery.

I bought a casio a number of years back 3Megapixels and it is superb for outdoor photography. Not so great indoor, but pics can be tweaked with imagining software.
I have had no problems with it, but I would say that a viewfinder is a must.
I wouldn't buy a camera, no matter how good, without one

  • Thanks to your replies. I've thought about the view finder thing before cus the cameras.co.uk man thinks its a must have like you two, but I'd rather have a smaller camera than a view finder, even if i do strugle in the sun. it really doesnt bother me, my old camera had a view finder and i never used it, notonce.

So apart from that can anyone disagree with either of these cameras? I just want someone to make my decision for me!

I have a casio, not that model, their exelent cameras. I have taken some lovely pictures with it. They can be just a shoot and go camera with lots of automatic settings or you can go into expert mode, learn the jargon, and get some stunning pictures. The movie mode on the casio is brilliant for what it is, better than some camcorders.

I dont know the Sony make but I would be put off with the fact that it takes different memory, which are more expensive.

Casio do have a refurbished shop too and sell some of their cameras very cheeply, there is a thread on the grabit board.

In a nut shell, the Casio is the best camera I have had, I did always stick to fuji and sang their praises too ..... LOL
