Appologies if there is another thread these should go on - I would normally search first but time is short today and I've said I'll post these recipies.
I'm attending a Holistic Therapies course and yesterday we were given a taster of using kitchen/garden products to treat the skin. I've not had chance to put any to the test yet, although I did sample a few.
All need to be stored in the fridge and used within 7 days.
Potato hand/foot cream
This is particularly good if you either have a build up of hard skin or very dirty hands. To make -
Peel, chunk and boil 1 medium potato to a mashing (fluffy) stage.
Mash the potato and add 2-3 drops glycerine, 2tbsp skimmed or semi skimmed milk and 2tbsp rosewater (bought or homemade - recipie to follow).
Mix well.
To use - take a small dollop and work vigorously into hands/feet. It does go through varying stages - keep working until dead cells come away - and then work some more
Some found it a little sticky - some found the stickiness went if you kept working it in vigorously. Worth trying on gardening hands perhaps?
Potato apparently is very healing - personally my hands react when they come into contact with the startch so I couldn't try it.
Rosewater.
Place rose petals/heads in a saucepan, cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 mins, store in fridge (tutor used a kilner jar)
Home tooth cleaner/breath freshner.
Peel of 1 orange and 1 lemon (including rind!!)
Chop and process the rind until approx like breadcrumbs. Add a level 1/4 tsp of bicarb & mix.
To use - just chew!!!
This takes some getting used to (taste) due to the rind, but it does leave your mouth feeling extrodinarily fresh!!
Toner for oily skin
put equal ammounts of freshly squeezed lime juice and water in a bottle and shake. Shake before each use. Can be used on the body and the face. I bet it's really refershing in the summer!
Face peel (NB it is a peel, so use with caution!)
Mash the following and apply by rubbing into skin and then rinsing
Tomato for all skin types - particularly to remove blackheads. Mash including the skin
Paw Paw - for normal/dry skin
Raw potato - acne!
Personally I've found garlic to be excellent for acne - but it can be quite drying.
Cleansers - use either natural yoghurt (be sure to rinse well as it can be very drying if left on) or skimmed/semi skimmed milk (apply this with cotton pads)
The yoghurt can be scented using fresh garden herbs - bearing in mind that lavender has fantastic healing qualities!
Scrub - mix oatmeal with a little warm water and use to exfoliate the body.
Well, that's all we'll be given until next July, but I'd love to know if anyone has any more they'd like to share!

Kaz - with the oily skin toner, does it have to be lime, or can you use lemon juice?0

Catowen - We were told that lemon juice is a lot harsher and more drying, so were advised to stick with Lime juice.January '06 Grocery Challenge (4th - 31st) £320.Week 1 - £73.99 Week 2 £5.10 (so far

This recipe is for a gentle exfoliator and mask and is suitable for even the most sensitive of skins.
Who is this suitable for: Everyone (male and female) of all ages. This is especially effective for dry or stressed skin and great in the winter for giving skin a boost.
You'll need:
1-2 tablespoons of pinhead (fine) Oatmeal
[This can be found in health shops and larger supermarkets, it must be pinhead oatmeal you use for this to work. Its around a 1 pound for a 500g bag]
a splash of semi-skimmed or full fat milk [just enough to make a paste]
Method:
Measure out the oatmeal into a bowl and slowly add milk and stir. Once the oatmeal and milk has reached a paste (sticky) consistency its ready to be used. Try not to make the paste runny as the thicker this is the easier it will stick to your face.
Using the paste:
Using clean hands apply the paste to cleansed skin and work the paste in small circular motions for around a minute (This is the exfoliation stage). Once this is done leave the paste on your face for around five minutes. I find it easier at this stage to lie down for five minutes and read a few pages of a magazine as when the paste starts to dry it can flake and could make a mess. After five minutes rinse the paste off using warm water then splash your face with cold water. Your skin should feel lovely and soft and smooth.
This is best made up fresh each time you plan to use it. Please don't use skimmed milk to make this up as it doesn't have the same effect. Hope this is useful to someone.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Hello everyone,
I was recently told to use olive oil and salt as an exfoliator and moisturiser and it works brilliantly and I swear I look younger too!
It got me thinking does anybody else have any handy tips like this?
Greatly appreciated x0 -
Hi judekazama,
We have a fairly recent thread on this subject so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.
This older thread also has some great beauty tips too:
Money saving beauty tips!
Also, if you look in the Mega Index Thread at the top of the board, under Make up and body careyou'll find lots more ideas.
