I used to have one of these about 20 years ago and remember loving it, I have a very small oven and having another would make life so much easier, DH must be feeling generous as he's agreed we can have one even though my ancient microwave has not died yet. I'm looking at the Delonghi in the Argos catalogue which has large capacity, convection and grill for £79.99.
Does anyone have a combi, does it make life any easier and are cakes baked in it any good?
Also what's the best microwave cookery book around as I don't have one any more.

Hi
we had a combi oven and a regular oven put in when we had our kitchen refit at the end of last year. We are very happy with it but I have to admit have not used it for making cakes!
On the microwave cookbook front whenver I am in 2nd hand book shops there are always loads of them!! Hopefully you should be able to pick one up cheap there. Good luck!0 -
I have had a combi for about three years. Can honestly say that I have not used it for about 3 years either. Its actually silly, seeing as though I complain that I want a double oven, however never really use the second one that I do have.
The reason I only used it a few times was that it used to take hours to get up to temperature.
Mine is a hinari0 -
I have a Panasonic combi microwave and I wouldn't be without it. It saves heating up the big oven for a small dish (or in fact a quite large casserole
) and it takes only a couple of minutes to heat up anyway. It takes much less time to cook everything too, so again, energy saving.
A word of caution - I checked out the Which site before buying. They recommended either a Panasonic or a cheap make (which I couldn't get round here so can't remember which one) for all round energy saving/ efficiency/ ease of use etc. I have to agree that if you want it to last, then go for a good one now. My last Panny was in daily use for 20 years. If I was 7 ft 3, I'd be the right height for my weight0 -
I use mine regularly, especially for oven chips on the special 'programme', it also makes cracking baked tatties too. The thing with cakes is to pre warm the oven, as it's not a fan oven....Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

We have a Panasonic combi and it is fantastic. Unfortunately it was bought in our pre-monesyaving days and it cost a lot - however it has more than paid for itself and if you can afford it I would definitely pay the extra.
I haven't tried cooking cakes in it yet although sponges should be fine.
The main win for us is rice (normal micro) and jacket potatoes - instead of waiting for oven to heat and sticking jackets in for hours, it takes about 12 mins for a fist-sized jacket potato. The skin is lovely and crisp thanks to the combination bit. It's dead easy - I just hit the "potato" button on the front and enter the weight, it does everything else.
You can also do bacon and sausages with the grill bit - our Panny came with a special extra high turntably bit to use for doing this.
For me it took a bit of mental adjustment to get the most out of a combi microwave - I didn't grow up with a microwave so it's not my natural instinct to cook things in it. We've had it for years and it's only now that I feel I'm getting the most out of it.
The recipe book/instruction manual that came with it is very comprehensive and has all sorts of general guidelines.0 -
I have a panasonic too - it was a best buy in Good Housekeeping when i was looking round. I must confess I haven't tried to make cakes in it.
We had one of the original combinations before that, I think it was a Belling and it was enormous which was why we replaced it. Gave it to DD to take to Uni and her flatmates christened it Chernobyl, didn't stop them using it though.

I can't afford the panasonic unfortunately but the Delonghi one looked like a good compromise

This is the one, can someone check it out for me and tell me what they think?Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

LOL. I had the Belling Triplet too when it first came out (circa 1984) I can understand it earning the name Chernobyl but it did make exceedingly good cakes, casseroles, roasties, jacket spuds, and so one. I wish they still did those super-sized micros my 'normal' micro is a toshiba and dates from the same era and is almost as large as my regular oven but when it goes to micro heaven I know I shall not be able to replace it with anything similar. I had one of these combi microwaves too, it blew up big style and have not had one since.
Are they any good for heating up takeaways lolI came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.0 -
I had a panasonic, if you look at Argos they have come doen quite a bit. I bought mine in 1995 and its still going strong, I cooked the sunday lunch in it this week. When we were in the cottage it was my oven for 2 years and I cooked for 7 in it. It will do anything your normal oven will do.......
When mine finally dies I will buy another, it was not cheap when we got it, but its certainly paid for itself, cooks quicker and heats up quicker than a conventinal oven, so saves dosh.
