Big savings on deodorant

After a friend recommended this, I bought a crystal deodorant stick from Holland and Barret for £4.45. It's supposedly a natural deodorant that doesn't clog your pores or stain clothing, it's just a sort of rock that you wet and rub on.
I was initially sceptical and thought it might be some sort of new age rip off, but according to my friend it works very well and his is still going strong after a year - so that represents a big saving on my usual expenditure of £5 a month on Mitchum non-staining deodorant.
I've used it for the first time today and it seems to be working ok. Does anyone else have any experience of these?
The only downside is it is not an anti-perspirant, so I could end up with Tony Blair style armpits. That's not really a problem in winter when I wear a vest but in summer it might get a bit embarrassing.

My mum uses this as she doesn't like to use deodrants with aluminum
in it. (Most deodrants do apparently) She says it lasts for ages and it does the job perfectly."There are no pockets in a shroud..."0 -

Short version
Nerdy bit how deodorants work: http://www.ul.ie/~childsp/CinA/Issue49/qanda.html
Make your own! Not nerdy just a recipe! True Money saving Tip
http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/guides/114
Longer version, only nerdy people beyond this point. Non nerds stop reading now...Ok a few clarifications and rants to be taken with a pinch of amphoteric salt----I said stop reading non nerd----
1."Natural" does not mean anything, it has nothing to do with hypersensitive or allergic reactions. Individuals who are hypersensitive or allergic to something regardless of its origin: “Natural” or “Synthetic” both terms mean the same as all chemicals are syntheses. If the come from plants, animals, bacteria or industrial process it does not mater. Antigen in the body are only interested in the active sites they lock onto they do not read labels, or care about animal testing.
2.Deodorant work but shifting the amphoteric metal salts balance on skin, you can do this with a mild salt solution, no magic here. This is the same for a deo stick, spray or bit of rock rich in amphoteric metal salts.
3.Sure the rock won't have the nice smells and moistures, and it depends on the moisture on the skin at time of application. Commercial products dump more controlled amounts on the skin, they are designed that way. The amphoteric metal salts are also mildly antibacterial as are some deos.
4.There is no alternative deo, or alternative medicine. There is stuff the works and stuff that does not! To misquote John Diamond
Martin makes a lot of effort to demystify stuff on this site, mainly to do with money. We cannot make informed decisions with out facts. Using loaded or meaningless terms like pure or natural are not actually helpful though author and reader may believe in them or gain comfort from these familiar terms. Death is a familiar term but it does not extend out understanding of the experience. Crack cocaine is a pure and natural product, but I would not use or recommend it! Sticky plasters are made from oil that goes through a refinery! You get my point. I'm not having a pop, just making a comment, sure everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm not trying to undo what has been posted here, or sensor anything.
I'm just making some comments no harm indended.
To answer the question will this stuff work?
It may if sufficient amphoteric metal salts is laid down with each application.
How much is enough?
Depends on ambient temperature, clothing, work load, bacterial populations and type, medical state of individual, etc.. Try it an see.
If it does work you could just apply a lot less of the commercial deo, rather than paste on lots "just to be sure”. If the rock works for you then you are sure that you need less amphoteric metal salts applied to the skin, This can be achieved by using less of commercial deo.
Will this rock run out?
Yes it will run out after awhile and gradually loose efficacy as salts are leached out (like the fruit flavour in an ice lolly but over a longer time). This is just like a non-stick pan, that sheds its coating molecule by molecule with use, nothing last for ever, but don't worry neither to human bodies
Why does it work for some people and not others?
Basically their sensitive to their own odour, number and type of bacteria on their skin, amount they sweat etc... If the rock works you can use a lot let conventional deodorants.Seth.0 -
Thanks for the fascinating facts Seth!
I think the real test of the deodorant will be when rushing to catch a train in hot weather while carrying heavy luggage and getting stressed - this is when I really start to stink!
Can you answer me this - WHY do my shirt cuffs remain dirty - no matter how much I wash or scrub them, use prewash treatments, soaking etc I still always have a grimy ring on my cuffs. Is this something to do with body chemistry or air pollution or water PH (I live in London where water is very hard).'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Another thing to consider about deodorants, as was mentioned earlier - most contain aluminium which according to some, is a major cause in breast cancer. Many people use these alternative ones because they don't like to load their bodies with chemicals/products, which either natural or not, are absorbed through the skin and can/may cause cancers or other such problems. It's the same with most commercial toothpastes - they contain fluoride, which I was told is more toxic than arsenic and slightly less toxic than lead (I'm not a chemist and haven't checked this out though:) ).
I personally will be switching to an aluminium-free deo when my current one is finished (after 30+ years, a few more sprays aint gonna matter and it's an MSE thing to do, use it all up) I also haven't used fluoride in 5 years, my children never have and my dentist tells me we have brilliantly clean teeth.:D
Don't get me started on SLS or SLES, that's going to have to wait for another thread!0 -
I don't think that the water is the problem re: dirty cuffs.
More that you live in London!
I moved from there 6 years ago and remember that the collars and cuffs of my shirts were wearing thin from the scrubbing to get rid of the dirt marks.
Live in Scotland now, and funnily enough, I don't have a brush to scrub my clothes any more!
'fraid that no amount of prewash is gonna help .....
... unless you move to the sticks of course! One day I want to be the pigeon...... and not the statue!0
