ethical sound paint?

I want to paint my bedroom (well I'll be the project manger and my husband will paint the room!) but want to use an ethically sound company to buy my paint from. Does anyone know of any? Thanks.

  • My first ever post so hope I'm doing this right! You could try Construction Resources in Southwark, London https://www.constructionresources.com. They supply all manner of green and ecologically sound building materials, etc. I've used their paints for some years now; theyr'e environmentally friendly, non-toxic and there's no dreadful paint smell - they just smell mildly vinegary when applied and this wears off after a few hours. They're quite a bit dearer than paints from the DIY store, so not really moneysaving but in terms of cost to the planet and our health I feel they're worth it. Good luck with the decorating!

  • I have recently painted our hall with 'green' paint (it was actually white though!!) Anyway, i got mine from http://thegreenshop.co.uk.

They have quite a few suppliers - can't remember which company i used in the end but have had no problems with it.

ECOS paints are environmentally friendly, not tested on animals so are endorsed by Animal Aid

They also do varnish, wood glue, sealer for floors, free from solvents and volatile compounds and harmful chemicals, non toxic, odourless

Operate through mail order, but do handpainted charts and sample pots

I have used The Green Shop and ECOS paints on many occasions and have always been very happy with both the quality of the service and the products

  • I believe that some of the traditional Farrow and Ball paints from Homebase are environmentally friendly and contain no VOC's but you'd have to double-check. Nice paint (have used myself) but not cheap - around £23/tin but think Homebase have 10% weekend which is still on tomorrow!

In this Saturdays Telegraph supplement they did a bit on eco paints and mentioned 3 companies:

    www.daylesfordorganic.com

    www.thelittlegreene.com

    www.earthbornpaints.co.uk

I have not visited any of these sites but they might be of interest

The O H & I are decorating & I've been looking into eco paints. I've got info from The Good Shopping Guide, The Ecologist & websites such as The Green Shop, biofa & auro. Has anyone used eco paints & if so how did they get on? Would they recommend? etc, etc.
    Thanks in anticipation. ;)

  • Hi rag_doll, I came across this company while searching for the same sort of thing online recently. Must admit I haven't checked them out in the green shopping guides but they recommend Auro paints exclusively.
