For those interested, I found these articles on British Gas condemning boilers:

Make up your own mind, but I think taking advantage of elderly people is sick and somebody should do something about them.

They've put a warning on ours despite it being serviced each year and looking in mint condition. I would get someone else in to tell me if its risky and then contact BG telling them they've caused me and the wife undue distress and worry.
In the spirit of gloating... you what... I can't gloat on this site anymore? Awww, how unfair. :(
  • For everyone's info, rules change and a boiler fitted 8 years ago might no longer comply with new regulations (which change too often). Not much you can do about that.

But surely that alone doesn't mean that everyone has to replace their boiler, if it's more than 8 years old ... does it?

I thought you could continue with the old boiler and then - only then - you had to comply with the new regulations when you bought a new one
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

We had a 'do not use' tag put on our boiler when it was last inspected - the inspector came round with his supervisor, and told my husband not to take too much notice of the tag - if his boss hadn't been there, he wouldn't have worried. It was because the boiler is in the kitchen, and there is limited airflow as the kitchen has no outside walls (although there are large vent bricks through to the conservatory, the outside passageway, and a vent in the connecting door to the living room, which also has an airbrick.

Just because it doesn't comply with the new regulations, doesn't mean it's inheritantly 'dangerous'
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • I signed up to the 24 hour service plan and when the guy came out to "assess" my boiler because it was 8 years old he condemded it! He said the seal had perrished slightly and I wouldnt be able to get the right seal. I work in engineering and we use loads of seals but he still capped it off saying you used to be able to put duct tape around it. It was the middle of November my wife was pregnent and we had a 2 year old baby! Thank you BG they sent a guy out to "sell" me a new boiler but said I would have to wait untill the end of January .........going all winter with no heating!!
I turned it back on and got someone to fit a boiler later in the year saving £600. I looked at the estimate and they were going to charge me £60 for getting rid of the old pipes etc, I took everything down the scrap yard and made £20. Oh I also had the boiler moved so it was worth it. They quoted me £1000 for the boiler but I did a search on the net and could get the exact same one for £500. Talk about highway robbery, but best of all they kept ringing me up to ask if I wanted to go ahead with it!

I can still get parts for boilers over 20 years old.

In a previous thread, someone got a bit techy with me for saying BG are a rip off, so be careful :rotfl:

I'd be much obliged if you could tell me were to get hold of the pressure release valve for an 8 year old combi boiler.
I have a friendly local plumber who is having difficulty getting the part. The alternative is a new boiler and because of it's location (in the attic) requiring a proper floor and access in addition to the plumbing for the condenser means it's going to be at least £1800.

    Worcester Bosch
    350 Combi
    Product Code: HC350 FSN
    P.I.N.: 87 AQ 88
    GC No: 43 311 13

Both myself and my friendly local plumber extend heart felt thanks. He'd had very little luck searching for my particular boiler. The part number was especially helpful and is showing up on the website at £5.99 which is going to save a lot of money and time !

Apparently I need the AAV too , hopefully be able to get it although there's no match with my GC number on the website. The PRV seemed to be the same part for the others. I'll phone them tomorrow and check.

    Once again thanks.
