    Depends how many children you have, and whether a partner is living with you or not. Get a claim form for it anyway.

    WIthout having all the information, I'm only guessing here - but if you're a single parent, chances are you will get some income support - but be warned, you might have to claim maintenance from absent parents.

    You'll probably be able to get council tax benefit, regardless whether or not you claim or are awarded income support. You don't have to claim maintenance to get working tax credit, child tax credit, council tax benefit or housing benefit - and any maintenance you do get is ignored for tax credit purposes. But you can only get housing benefit if you live in rented accommodation. I would advise against moving into rented accommodation and selling up any earlier than strictly necessary.

    If you have a partner with you, you're less likely to get income support, and are more likely to have to claim jobseeker's allowance instead.

    Hope that helps. :)

    I might be wrong but i didn't think you could be in receipt of both Income Support and Tax Credits.

    My single mum friend claims CTC and WTC but gets no help with mortgage,council tax, or school dinners.

    She is entitled to free perscriptions,and only has to pay 30% of childcare costs.
    (i think she's also told me she gets cheaper swimming sessions and courses if she went on one - but this might be a local thing rather than national)

    She keeps all of her maintainance money from her ex.

    She also gets 25% of council tax bill - for only 1 adult living there (this has nothing to do with tax credits though- it's the same for anyone with only 1 adult in the house)

    My understanding if she were to go on Income Support instead is that she would receive help towards her mortgage (not necessarily it all though) or if she lived in rented accommadation her rent would be paid. Her council tax would be paid for and she'd also get free school dinners but she would not be allowed to keep her maintainance money.
  • Details for claiming Income Support available on the DWP website Income Support details

    From which I quote.
    Can I get it?
    Are you:
    * Aged between 16 and 59?
    * On a low income?
    * Not working or working on average less than 16 hours a week?

    £4.85 National minimum wage for 16 hrs =£77.60 so they will assume your over the limit.

    As I understand it, you can't get WTC and Income Support at the same time, because you have to be working more than 16 hours for WTC and less than 16 hours for income support.

    I'd like to know what I can claim. Oh, it's the UK. So nothing. I'll just pay tax and continue to work overnight in order to earn enough to pay for everything. A 25% reduction in council tax does !!!!!! all when half of your pay goes in rent.

    I begin to see in some aspects why the dole is the better option.

    Just interested, which country do you think you'd receive benefits in? If you were in the U.S for example and injured, the medical staff wouldn't look at you unless you had insurance. I speak from experience husbands gran when visiting her daughters in Canada and when she collapsed, the medical staff only helped her when hubbys aunt produced her CC. (her insurance details weren't able to be checked due to time difference and office being closed). Unless you attended a private school you've been educated for free likewise any children you have/may have. Anyway it's an interesting subject but perhaps doesn't help the OP. What about putting the subject into Discussion Time where members could contribute their views.

    Best wishes
