There have been a couple of threads about the LD recently, might be worth doing a search as they were some good where to go suggestions.

I would think it will take you a couple of hours from Glasgow to Penrith maybe 2 and a half to 3 hours to the South lakes.

I like the smaller places like Grasmere, Bowness and Ambleside can get very busy in high season, bank hols and weekends.

Kendal is quite a nice place to visit - there is a train station in Kendal or there is the main west coast line running through Oxenholme which is on the outskirts of kendal. Windermere is well worth a trip aswell, as are most places in the lakes!

If time is a restriction you could start in keswick and drive down from keswick (lovely town and lake) to Windermere, stopping in at grassmere and ambleside on the way all very nice towns and villages.

All of them have access to lakes

I would certainly do Windermere (inc. Bowness) and Kendal.

I also subscribe to the gocumbria website and they send an email with discount vouchers. Here's the link with the latest:

I don't know what sort of thing you are looking for, but Levens Hall (with topiary gardens) is well worth a visit.

  • Keswick's great for a couple of nights. It gets very busy, especially at weekends so make sure you've booked your B&B before you go!

Don't forget to pop into the pasty shop for an energy boost on your walk! mmm... :)

I absolutely love Wastwater. It never fails to take my breath away. No matter whether I go there in winter, spring, summer or autumn.

Ennerdale water is also beautiful. Both are never usually too busy if you want somewhere peaceful.

1 of my friends got engaged at Buttermere, which I've heard is also lovely but I've never been there myself.

https://www.western-lakedistrict.co.uk has info on some of the lakes and fells.

On a good weather day, the view of Bassenthwaite lake as you drive from the Western Lake District on the A66 across to Keswick can be stunning.

We went to the Lakes a couple of weeks ago for the first time with 3 kids. i agree with previous post Wastwater is really great. We popped into Hawkshead for an afternoon which was not that busy even though it was school hols and we really liked it. Did the Wordsworth school bit, had afternoon tea and a wander - Enjoy

  • Just got back from a few days in Lakes (Borrowdale near Keswick) - top tip you can get train tickets for as little as £1 each way from Manchester or Edinburgh to Carlisle or Oxenholme (for Windermere station & buses to Ambleside, Grasmere, Langdale etc) - book via Megatrain.com

My favourite places are Buttermere, Borrowdale and the Langdale Valley, I think Keswick is the nicest of the larger towns, followed by Ambleside. Grasmere and Hawkshead are lovely villages but get very busy in summer.

I have posted some more pictures here: :)
