I've been told that myself and workmates arent working fast enough. The boss has decided to get someone in to video us and go through it with us to show us where we can speed up! Can he do this?! Can we refuse to be filmed?

Wow that sounds a nice boss - joke!
To be honest I dont think you can really refuse to be filmed - after all it would be a bit like having CCTV?! I should of thought that he would be able to do this - it is surprising how efficency and productivity go up when something like this happens - like the 'fish' strategies - this is it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0340821949/026-3611876-4314860?v=product-description&n=266239Weight Loss - 102lb0 -
I'd ask your union rep if you have one! I'm not sure, but I would have thought getting you all involved in process mapping and redesign might be a better way to go about it!Debt free 4th April 2007.

What your boss could be trying to do is establish how the job is being done at present and then suggest ways to improve it - even make it better for you and his company. Sometimes the most logical way to do a job is not necessarily the best way and the best way may not always be the quickest. Just a thought. I would agree that you could voice your concerns to your union rep if you have one or even your line manager.

As far as I am aware your boss can. It would probably be better for you to sit and think what you can get from this yourself and how you can use it to your advantage. This kind of thing is becoming more common and to be honest quite effective, usually deployed when a company is up against some serious cash flow or personel problems.
I'd be inclined to go along with other posters and check with your union rep if you have one or the TGWU if you don't they will be happy to supply information irrespective of whether or not you are a union member.
Don't forget that under the DPA you are also entitled to a copy of any and all footage upon request, so should you subsequently receive any kind of disciplinary action as a result {which I presume is one of your fears} of anything you may do or say whether innocent or otherwise, you will at least be able to view all footage and in the very least ensure you receive fair and equal treatment to other employees, ie an employer can not cherry pick who he disciplines he must ensure that all are treated equally or face tribunal action. So he cannot use it against those he has a gripe with and not the brown-noser's.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
Stop winging, get on with it... what's the big deal? You get paid for being there... remember?! Not only will this hopefully improve your job, but you might learn something about efficiency too.0

So might the boss. It could be that his dictats are hampering the staff actually doing the job!"This site is addictive!"

As long as you have been made aware that you are being filmed, there is nothing you can do about it. I video people as part of my job, although that is with a covert camera, so they are not aware they are being taped.
I had the same thing happen to me in a previous job, where we were observed at work in order to improve efficiency. It was uncomfortable being watched all the time, but the improvements gained from it did save time in the long run.
It was worth putting up with a few days of being watched, as the job became a lot easier afterwards. Here I go again on my own....0 -
As others have said, this is simply another way of doing time and motion studies. The majority of large companies do this frequently but more often with someone who tails you/ listens into your calls etc with a electronic pad which they note everything you do and it automatically times you.
At the end of the day, if you and your colleagues feel that you are working at full speed then all this will do is prove the fact that you are and get your boss off your back. If however you are slacking a little then now would be the time to pick up the pace and get on with what your paid to do.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Im sure you would have to sign something to say if this is ok or not!!!0

if cctv is to be installed then yes its ok to be done but if someone is actually filming you you need written permission for them to do it.
if you say no you need to give a reason as to why you dont want to be filmed.
it is within your rights not to be filmed.
i would seek advice from a union rep asap if you have one0
