They are probably carpet beetles or maybe tobacco bettles (search google images to see a pic)
The 'Protector spray' is what I used for carpet bettles http://www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk/acatalog/cockroach_control_2.html
Works very well, no smell or stains etc. If they are the tobacco beetle, you may want to check all your powdery items such as flour, spices etc......they tend to live in them.....eeeew !

Not much use to the average person...

Insects with cerci or other abdominal appendages?
    - What is a cerci?

    Tarsi 3-segmented
    - Huh??

Small or minute insects with a forked springing organ under rear of abdomen - If it's minute how on gods earth are you supposed to know if it has a 'springing organ' ????

Plus what if it's <5mm and lives inside the house? Doesn't seem to fit any of the criteria...

Unfortunately you may have the same problem I did......spent 3 years thinking I had an infestation of woodworm in my kitchen. The beetles would appear on work surfaces in summer but only in very small numbers - a max of 2 or 3 per day. Looked everywhere for dust and holes and treated all the wood behind cabinets etc.

I finally found the problem - I had a bag of very old quorn and these beetles had been living on that. I went through all my food and found that they had also got into a jar of dry spaghetti and a small packet of tarmigan. Cleared that all out and haven't seen them since.....did have a small panic recently though when similar beetles reappeared - turned out they were off the sweet peas, brought in from my allotment :-)

My advice is to check all cupboards and packets of food near to where the beetles are appearing - good luck !!

Can't believe that my post just crossed yours but pleased that you found the source of the problem - be interested to know what type of beetle it is.

Glad you found them....I thought they would be in the powdery food stuffs...

I had these in my whole house when I first moved in here. They are so small they are like a dot moving around on the worktop. I spent about 6 months going over every dry surface with bleach about twice a week. I saw one a couple of days ago so I went over the whole kitchen again. Pest control will come and fumigate the place if you pay them and so will the council but you will have to pay them too.
