Santander problem

I applied for an account with Abbey (Santander) on 24th February and ticked the boxes for online banking etc. They said it would take 5 working days to open. 2 weeks later I called up to be told they only just received the application. They then tell me it’s accepted and I get a card in the post with a pin and welcome back a few days later. To date, no paying in book or online banking details. I called the other day to be told I don’t need a paying in book just deposit cheques blah blah so I went to the branch and put a cheque in. Now I call again asking where the paying in book and online banking details are they say my account is closed... so I went to the ATM to try my card it says my cheque hasn’t cleared yet so available balance is NIL. I started a complaint on 15th March which has gone straight to Stage 2 but I have not had a response yet. I told them that I'm unhappy with their unethical approach to customer service, that I didn’t like the attitude of certain personnel with their unwillingness to help and needless addition of time added to resolve complaints then went on how I called them on 3 consecutive days and left messages for a call back but how they were ignored.

What do I do now, do I contact Financial Ombudsmen Service or go in branch and speak to the manager... or would you just leave it? Im sick of the hassle now anyway I think I will just get my money back as soon as I can (Can they give me it over the counter or do I have to wait for a cheque in the post? How long does this process usually take?), close the account, and move to RBS.

As far as i know you need to exhaust the bank's own complaints procedure before approaching financial ombudsmen.

i am not too sure, but if your account is closed i would think they would send a cheque by post of closing balance. if you have a debit card, you can withdraw your money and then close the account.

If account is closed how did you check that balance is NIL?
  • Santander dont issue paying books so you will never ever get one. If a large cheque is paid into a brand new account, chances are it is going through extended clearance.
