Heard about new "not for profit" energy supplier on radio 4 today, starting up later in year, but hopes in July if possible

"Welcome to At Cost Energy - where we believe gas and electricity are a necessity to live, not a luxury!

We challenge why ANY company should be allowed to profit from something that in our founder's opinion, is a basic human right.

As the name suggests we offer gas and electricity AT COST, no hidden extras, no flashy London offices, no pretty water feature in reception, no shareholders, no director bonuses, just the same gas and electricity you use currently, but AT COST!"

I've registered my interest, just have to wait and see how it all works, and more importantly, how much

Lots of discussion about them here (and in numerous other threads).

Shame they don't supply yet. Just appears to be harvesting personal information.

If you want a non-profit making energy supplier, take a look at Ebico

They do currently supply, but just because they are non profit making does not imply they are the cheapest. Use the comparison sites in the resource bar above to see who would be cheapest for you. (only companies that supply are included ;))

    Edit: Don't believe the hype!!!
    It says on their website:
You won't find At Cost Energy on any comparison or switching website because we refuse to build additional costs into our business. Each of these websites get paid substantial commissions for swapping consumers from one company to another, these commissions are then recouped through your energy bills, often classified as an acquisition cost or cost of supply.

    This is nonsense!

It has been posted either by someone who hasn't got a clue or in an attempt to deliberately mislead and deceive.

The reason you will not find them on any comparison site is very simply because they are not currently able to supply and have no published prices.

If they ever do, they will be included on the comparison websites. All generally available suppliers/tariffs are included. Ebico have already been there and had that battle (but then Ebico have been supplying energy on a not for profit basis for 10 years!) . Ebico don't pay anyone commission.

(The only difference is that you can't usually switch via the comparison sites if no commission is paid ... but the supplier & tariff is still listed so that anyone interested can approach the supplier directly.)

    Hi

I heard Matt Stockdale on Radio 4's You and Yours today. Still no mention of prices. I look forward to seeing how much he's going to charge.

  • Remember the Pipeline Card for cheap petrol that was working on the basis people need petrol so get some names together then pressurise retailers for discounts? Almost FIVE YEARS after Ben SCAMmell started harvesting details of service users, absolutely nothing has resulted.

Wait, I am not quite correct, what I should say is what has resulted in Mr SCAMmell's project is offers on cheap wines, insurance deals and utility comparisons. Does he profit from this? I do not know for sure.

What I do know is following his stunt there is no way I will be providing my details to a company like At Cost Energy until they are up off the ground and taking supply contracts. I have significant doubts they will ever be up and running as described, and think the data harvesting is a red herring.

I am staying away, others may be wise to do the same.
