advice? thomson scary emergency landing = cancelled flight then long delay

Options
hi, i just got back from a great holiday with a horrible ending! Gran Canaria A/I, Thomson package, through Yorks First Choice.

Shortest Story I Can Manage: scary emergency landing in a First Choice plane, told 30 min wait, abandoned in departures, mixed messages on different monitors, eventually a Tomson lady said flight later cancelled as plane broken, no refreshments or phone call as it was always only a 30 min wait. had to go through bag collection, then check in & security again, most peoples duty free & water was removed but i stuck to my guns and saw a supervisor and kept it.

We should have landed at 5.30, we didnt land till nearly midnight. we had a 2 1/2 hr drive after to get home - which was not a good experience. i had to call in sick the next day as i was so overtired and exhausted.

(oh, and my case was smashed to pieces during the 2nd flight. seriously only the foam inner was holding my clothes in. what a nice finishing touch!!)

sorry for the long post, but i really would appreciate any advice on who to contact, what to say and what not to say! I dont think i want to fly Tomson again.

Well assuming you did a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) on arrival, you should be able to get something for your damaged case - or get it repaired at their expense.

As to compensation for the delay - doubtful. I think they will justifiably claim 'extraordinary circumstances', but even so there are those who will say that that they should have had a second plane waiting for just such an eventuality.

Could still be worth a letter.

i got some paperwork from the help desk and she said they'd call in in a few days and send me a new case. there would be no way to repair it unless they can fit a whole new lid!

it was a 'green hydraulic' that broke - and on landing we had no way to steer - which sounds like a faulty badly checked plane to me, not an act of god!

thanks for your advice - who should i write to, thompson or first choice?

What exactly is it that you want?

Your case is broken, they are going to replace it. Deal done.

The plane had to make an emergency landing, it was an emergency!!

If it hadn't have took this course of action you might not be here now. You expect them to pay you compensation for thinking of yours, and the safety of all the other passengers on board. So you had a delay, it could have been a lot worse.

I doubt very much that the plane was 'badly checked' - the pilots want to get themselves home safely as well as you!

Don't let one experience put you off using a particular carrier. Even the best airlines suffer from unexpected events. Planes breakdown, just like cars do, they are mechanical and that's life. You could have a similar time with any airline, the difference (I think) is how they act to rectify or compensate you when it happens.

As a guide I'd advise writting to Thompson and or First Choice explaining your concerns or compaint (write it "matter of fact" rather than "blowing your top" and use the "we have never had this sort of experience before with yoiur service" and "usually you are much better handling this sort of disruption".

Kissing butt often gets better results than screaming at them. You may just get a letter of appology but, you might just get a free holiday or vouchers towards your next. Give it a go. Address yout letter to the boss (CEO, Managing Director etc and get his/her name if you can) they wont actually see it but his/her office is likely to give it to a senior complaints officer and you will get better attention to your case than addressing to customer service or complaints dept.

It sounds as if you were delayed for six hours. Under EU regulations you were entitled to "care" (food; drink; telephone calls) during that period. If you spent any money and kept the receipts you should be able to collect reimbursement.

to be honest, any holiday company that moves my house 2 1/2 hours from the airport whilst I'm away won't know what's hit them. I can't believe they had the cheek to force an unforseen delay on you and then increase your drive home afterwards. It beggars belief.

Which airport was this as I may boycott them as well out of priniciple

and ask again what it is that the OP wants?

Is it just me that is really fed up by the fact that these days some people are always looking for some kind of compensation for everything out of the ordinary that happens instead of thinking 'well, that's life!' and just getting on with it?
