Hi,
I know someone whose partner has just left her. I won't go into the reasons, but he has really dumped her in it and needs some serious help / info. She cannot work, is on disability and has two teenage daughters. The 'bloke' concerned was her husband, but they divorced quite a few years back, but he continued to live with them. Together they set up a business, off the back of which they bought their council house. However, now that he has gone he has set up his own business and essentially left her with nothing. As she cannot work she is unable to pay the mortgage. Hopefully her ex will come through, but if he doesn't I want to be able to tell her about any other benefits that she might be intitled to (other than the standard ones).
Thanks for the help guys.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the mortgage & house is in her name alone.

Hi,
You should advise her to urgently go to her local Citizens Advice Bureau as without knowing her full details it is difficult to isolate bits and pieces and say what she might be entitled to. They can look at her overall situation. To find her nearest CAB see Citizens Advice Website.Torgwen.....................

Am I right in saying that she might be entitled to help with her mortgage interest payments?Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

You can only get help with mortgage interest payments if you are on Income Support and that wouldn't start for six months. It's important for her to get advice as soon as possible as a situation like this is complicated.Torgwen..........

The waiting time before Help with Mortgage Interest may be less if you are a single parent whose partner has died or left. More details available from the link to Shelter Help with housing costs
but Fran is quite right, professional help is needed before things get worse and so the sooner the waiting period is started the sooner the rate of deterioration of financial position will begin to lessen.
