Windows 7 Update Issue - Blank Screen on Boot up

Just a heads up, and wondering if anyone else has had the same issue, running Windows 7 64bit.
Installed the following update..
Optional - Update for Windows 7 x64 (KB976264) Compatibility update
Later on in the day went to start my Dell 1545 machine and everything booted up normal up to the 'Welcome' screen, then instead of the desktop loading I got a Blank screen with just a cursor (no boot-up sound as well). Had to do a forced shut down via the start button. Tried again and the same thing happened.
Managed to boot the computer via F8 and 'use last good configuration' and booted up fine. Ran some Virus/Malware scans and came back all clear. Passed all Hardware diagnostics and checked Device manager for issues but all clear.
Updated the Bios and rebooted, again same issue, blank screen after 'Welcome' screen.
Reboot into F8, and then 'last good confirguration' resulted in blank screen, However another try, resulted in correct boot up.
This only left the Windows update, so restored Windows via System restore to the last restore before the update was applied and rebooted. It is booting normal now.
5 test boot-ups all went fine so looks like a dodgy Windows update. Insert 'rolleyes' here.:)

This update is a compatability update that checks a lot of files on reboot.
There does seem to be an issue with this update being VERY slow to install on the following reboot. Unfortunately, whilst installing, it does hang for some time (have had this on 3 computers so far) and patience was a virtue for me. It is likely that the update was still installing when you forced the shut down, resulting in a corruption of system files, which the following boot would have attempted to fix. Any failed update, will result in a slow reboot as the system files are checked and repaired.
How long were you waiting before you hit the power button ? Of the 3 slow ones I've had, 2 were about 5 minutes and the third was about 12 minutes !!!
A nice message stating 'installing update' would have been helpfulFreebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A0 -
Just checked and it installed ok here, no noticeable hanging or stalling.Move along, nothing to see.0

I did actually turn the Laptop on and went to do something else before actually seeing the blank screen. So it had been booted for 5+mins at least on initial boot. Normal boot-up on this particular laptop is less than 50secs.A nice message stating 'installing update' would have been helpful
Yes, quite right. I might install the update again and see what happens.0 -
Is this page any help?

That'll be useful if I need to remove the update again due to any issues.0
