BT Contract Issue.

I have received my letter from BT stating in a round about way that my contract will be renewed – 12 months.

My situation is that just over 12 months ago I havd to get a phone line in my house which I did through BT. Part of this new line process required me to sign up to BT line rental for 12 months which is now seemingly up.

Therefore im currently paying BT line rental.

Additionally I have broadband through Orange and part of the deal is that they have taken over my phone line and all my calls are charged through them (free weekend / evening calls).

My question is that do I need to renew my 12 month contract with BT?. If I cancel the rolling contract what other options do I have?.

Hope that’s not too complicated!!!.

Thanks in advance.

Even though you have handed over your calls to Orange, you still have BT's Unlimited Weekend Calls Plan with your line rental even though you cannot use it. That's free and does not include any form of contract.

Your only problem is likely to be if you use Caller Display and/or basic 1571. Those are both provided on your line by BT and, because you cannot now make the necessary 2 chargeable or inclusive calls per month via BT (Orange use WCLI so the 1280 prefix won't work), BT will charge you for those.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Heinz,

    Thanks for reply.

Im still a bit puzzled (that doesnt take much) regarding the 12 month contact which i am going to be put on (stay on) by BT.

If i wanted for example to go to Orange for calls / broadband / line rental in the future would i have to pay to get out of my BT contract?.
  • Also,

I dont use the BT functions you mention.

If you get BT to REMOVE your 'free' off-peak calls package, you will not then be committed to ther 12 montrh renewable minimum term.
  • Which when my calls go through Orange is what i should be doing.

Just a call to BT to say remove my 'free' off peak calls package will then put me on a rolling line rental contract .....yes?

    Thanks for advice.
