I have travelled to the USA on many occasions and thought that we could start a thread to help USA noobs avoid being ripped off by travel agents and also just general money savings tips whilst in the USA.
My top tips.
BOOK THE WHOLE THING YOURSELF! DO NOT USE A TRAVEL AGENT!
Use the internet to get the best flight deal ,check out the forum for the cheap flight threads.
Hotels

The local travel agent wont tell you about this gem,
How does it work? Hotwires partners allow it access to their unsold inventory - empty seats on flights, empty hotel rooms, and unrented cars - at big savings. By showing the name of the travel partner after you book, Hotwire can get you travel deals that are significantly below published prices.
So I hear you say i don’t wont to book a hotel that I don’t know the name of.
Well you get to see the name as soon as you have booked, the star rating the full hotel amenities trip adviser rating and Hotwire only use big hotels like Hilton holiday in Ramada ect ect.
But the savvy punter will use http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?act=idx
to actually identify the nameless hotel before booking.
This site by matching the star ratings and amenities along with its location is a forum that tells you what hotel you are looking at, clever hey!
The savings are huge for buying a nameless "cough" hotel
I recently booked on Hotwire a 4* hotel in Boston on hotwire for September 12 for three nights at $99p.n about £55 using the better bidding site I knew before i booked it was the Boston park plaza, on Lastminite .com for the same date at £250 per night.
Car hire and flights are also nameless but again they only use the big multinationals, give it a try.
Amtrak.
Never let a travel agent book your tickets for you, you will generally just get the rack rate.
Amtrak always has promo codes in use and a simple search on the internet could save you a packet.
I have just used code H568 on Amtraks website to save $146 on a return trip from Boston to New York, this is a buy one get one free promo, other codes can be found on various sites but http://www.railserve.com/discus/messages/6/1423.html?1098029486 is a good place to start
I have loads more including car hire, gambling, shopping that I will post later , anyone else have any tips?
