Moving Gas Meters

Options
Hi all, I have recently bought my first house and am doing up my kitchen. I want to move the gas meter in the kitchen approximately half a metre to the left and have been quoted a price *from* £782 for the privilege! And that quote is only up to 2 meters, the price increases for anything more than 2 meters!! The National Grid advise that this is the best quote they will do as no-one else is able to move it as it is the property of the National Grid.

Is this true and if so are they able to do this as the price seems a little extortionate, especially as they have the monopoly in this. I wonder, are they even regulated by a financial / official body?

I would appreciate any help on this.

  • AFAIAA any GAS SAFE registered engineer can move a gas meter providing it is moved less than 2 meters and the original lever for turning off the supply is not moved. Call you gas supplier and they will be able to confirm this.

Providing they have the correct qualification to do so - so not any gsr engineer just as not every gsr is qualified to deal with carbon monoxide etc - go to https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk and use the advanced search option which has a droped down menu with the list of types of gas instalations etc that you need work on - and type in your post code it will then give you a list of gsrs in your area meeting that criteria.

Thanks all for your tips and advice on this, I'm glad that there are actually other alternatives (even though the National Grid advised me that this is not the case!!).

    Thanks again.
