Getting a product idea off the ground as a small biz

Hi Everyone
I've been searching the forum threads recently for hints and tips about getting a product idea off the starting blocks, developing prototypes, finding a small UK-based domestic manufacturer etc but seem to have hit a brick wall. So I thought I'd kick off a new thread to see if anyone might be a bit more clued up than me!
For me personally, I've a small idea and I'm not looking to take over the world - just a small lifestyle business, starting with a limited range of products and seeing where it leads. But (BIG but!) my business knowledge is limited, I've never done anything like this before, and my start-up capital is small. SO I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!! Plus I thought there might be others who are in the same boat who'd benefit from chipping in/advice etc.
I think I've found someone to produce my prototypes for me, but has anyone any idea where you can get a list of manufacturers (preferably NW England for me)? What kind of quantities would you need to order to get a good deal? Do you need any kind of insurances (eg public liability etc)?
Anyone with any small bit of info would be really useful, thank you all!

www.businesslink.gov.uk is a great resource, take a look and see what they do.

Thank you! I'm working my way slowly through business link - it's a massive site with loads of info so you're right, it's great. But it doesn't give the experiences of people who've "been there done that" with starting a new product. Anyone any experience of how to approach manufacturers etc?HIGHEST DEBT £63,300 LBM 27/5/2020 DEBT FREE DATE 31.08.20220

Hi Debbie-debt
Been through this, some time ago, so if you have any questions pm me, will try and help or point in right direction,
It is very very daunting at the start of anything new, but if you have the idea push!0 -
There are some nice case studies at http://www.appliedproductdesign.co.uk/ featuring Dragon's Den applicants. I'd have a look into using a product design agent, and you will certainly need to cover your patents and trademarks etc before you go any further.
I have no idea whether agents are the best route forward or whether they take a large cut or even worse some of your IP...but I would certainly get in touch with a few and get as much info as you can from their sites.
Getting an business partner on board who has some capital and can handle the business side of things may be another option, creativity combined with business skills will be a winning combination.0 -
I work for Business Link and would strongly suggest that you go to Google and type in Business Link North West and call the number on the website. Explain your situation and ask for an experienced adviser to contact you.
Best of luck0
