Cancelling "Price Guarantee March 2011" with British Gas...
Options
I've just had my latest bill through and seen i've been signed up to British Gas 'Price Guarantee March 2011' I was previously on the 'Price Guarantee December 2009' however it seems they have automatically moved me onto this tarrif.
Now i'm guessing there are far cheaper tarrifs out there and my account is also in credit so switching + cashback is obviously appealing.
Can i just cancel this being as i never agreed to sign up in the first place?
I'm just concerned as i have only just have found an unread email from which states
Does anyone know where i stand before i pick up the phone?

Of course, if you decide that you would not like to take up this offer then we will happily move you to our Standard Tarrif. Simply follow the online instructions before 31 January 2010.

You had the e-mail advising how to prevent being rolled onto the new tariff which you have overlooked.
If you wish to come off the tariff by switching or switching to a cheaper tariff then the cancellation charges will kick in. £35 for each fuel.
This is the only fixed rate tariff being reduced by 7% in line with the recent price decrease because the tariff is new and is so close to the price decrease.0 -

Thanks, it also tells me i should have received a letter in the post relating to the Direct Debit, which never arrived though... I'm all for paperless billing but important changes like this should still be sent via email and the post... and more importantly be highlighted at the top of the email rather than hidden 3/4s of the way down.
And even more importantly there should be no penalty if you wish to switch from something you never agreed to sign up to!TESCO EVERY LITTLE change to the t&cs HELPS0 -

I agree! I missed the email and never received a letter. They were quite sniffy with me when I called to find out what was going on too!

That is shocking!!
Didnt Scottish Power get in trouble before about renewing customers on to a product with a cancellation fee??
You should be able to contact someone to complain?0 -
The terms and conditions of the original LTC state that you may be offered a new fixed priced product at the end of the contract.
You will be written to giving you an opportunity to opt out of the new product if you do not wish to transfer to it.
On both occasions mentioned above the customers have overlooked the e-mail advising of this and have therefore been rolled onto the new product.
I don't think paperless billing customers receive a letter, just an e-mail.0 -
I am in same position. They automatically put me onto a new capped tariff, but did not write or e-mail to let me know this had been done, therefore I was not given an opportunity to opt-out or cancel.
The 1st I knew of it was when I received an e-mail telling me they had dropped the prices of the Price Guarantee 2011 that I'd signed up to!
When I replied to say I don't remember signing up to a new contract they said it was done automatically and there would be a £35 cancellation fee for BOTH gas & elec!!
I don't think I should be charged a cancellation fee for something I did not sign up for, nor was I notified that I had been automatically signed up for it.0 -
Easy - "Upgrade" to their "Online Saver with energysmart" (or whatever its called) tariff.
BG are waiving cancelation fees for upgrades to this tariff.
Once you are on it, you can switch away with no cancelation fee, you even get a shiny new energy monitor thrown in!

Yep, see the other thread.
They have put me on the standard tarrif and waived the cancellation fees. They were supposed to send me a letter notifying me of the new locked in tarrif, but didn't!0
