I am very interested in buying a Pc from meshcomputers
http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODCATEGORYVIEWPAGE&USG=APPLICATION&ENT=APPLICATION&KEY=71608
The first two on this page are the ones Im looking at.
Firstly are they good value? and is that the best deal for a computer of that spec? (I would have prefered a tft moniter aswell, but really cant stretch to more than £600)

Secondly What is SLI ready? and should I be going for the new AMD Socket AM2 (I would like this computer to be upgradable in the future)

Any help very much appreciated

Don't worry about SLi, it's not something you'll use, or at least not at that end of the graphics card spectrum. SLi basically allows you to run more than more graphics card at the same time. It's generally only really for the hardcore gamers, you usually get a better performance increase from selling your current card, and buying a more powerful one.

With regards to AM2 it's worth going for at such a small price increase (and you get a DVD Writer).

AM2 is more future proof as it uses the newer socket 940 (instead of 939), requires a new form of heatsink/fan, and uses DDR2 memory (instead of just DDR).

You'll barely get any performance increase with it, but it will future proof the pc more.

The big question is what you want the computer for. Unless you have some serouis requirements then Dell have some good prices for systems with a TFT monitor

Thanks for the replies, for me I want a pc that works lol I have no additional requirements (although I use psp from time to time so it would be nice to have something that doesnt crash evertime I load it up! )
My partner, however uses autocad for a living and wants to be able to work at home from time to time, as I said though our budget is tight, and the computer I linked too seems to be the best spec for our budget, but I dont know enough about graphics cards to know if that one is suitable!

All PC's are upgradeable. the problem is that people leave it too late to upgrade and find that the cpu socket is no longer being used and things have moved on and to another design and faster cpus. so to upgrade you either buy the fastest cpu your board will support or replace the motherboard, cpu and usually memory its an upgrade but costs a bit more than just replacing the cpu. The better one of the 2 would be the one witht he new AM2 socket AMD should be using that socket for a few more months (yeah AMD change sockets alot more than Intel I think.

SLi is the ability to use 2 graphics cards for extra performance. Boards being SLi cablable have 2 PCIe 16 slots on them to take the 2 cards.
while were on Graphics the Nvidia 7300GS is a few generations ago but will be fine for some gameing just dont expect blistering performance. the cards arent too expensive about £40 you could use SLi but is a bit of a waste as it is an older chip

As for a monitor the pc's dont specify that it is included the cheapest LCD monitor about is this one from scan when it is on their daily special offers page it is below £100 inc VAT or check out Aria deal for the day they always seem to have at least 1 17" TFT for under £100 there is 1 on there today.

Good value? for me no but that is because I would build it myself and the components would be cheaper but you are paying for someone to build it the warrenty and the Windows XP licence.

    Ok after reading your reply
Autocad, if you want to use that at home unless they have changed the way it is licenced you will need to buy it Last time i sold a copy was autocad 14 and it used a hardware dongle on the LPT port the software was about £2500 so tell her to go jump and save a fortune not having to but a higher spec pc to run it. I would also recomend you go for an intell cpu if your considering using Autocad on it Dual core would also benifi from it I think now.
What do you use the PSP for? transfering files to the PSP? any windows 2000/XP machine should do that without crashing maybe there is a problem with your operating system if that is causing you problems.

I've had two computers from Mesh over the last 6 years and they are both still working fine. I recently bought a laptop from Dell as they seemed to be offering the best deals but when buying my desktops I found Mesh to be offering the best deals on both occasions.

Their customer service is often complained about but thankfully I've never had a reason to contact them.

Good point. OP, does your other half get a license via work? Does she remote into her machine at work?

Why Intel? Isn't AutoCAD largely a lot of floating point calculations in which case an AMD would be more favourable? Actually even when rendering I've seen dual core Athlons outperform Intel Pentium D's by quite a way. Plus you effectively get more bang for your buck with AMD.

A computer services co we have used for a year or so have emailed me this Fujitsu-Siemens PC Tower offer. I'm buying the £225 one. No web page, just a Word Doc with pics etc. which I can send you if you pm me. The £100 inc VAT Acer flat screen is not bad either (my son has the identical 17" one - pretty good display maybe not graphic designer standard though).

I asked if these are quiet PCs (home office use you see) they tell yes & the fan swiitches off when CPU not in use.
