I have just got my phone bill and it seems my kids have been calling premium rate numbers really early in the morning. My phone bill is £236.31 for 1 month! I swear there will be murder in this house when they get home from school! I want to find out what the number is but don't want to call it because it will cost me another £1. I have told them never to use the phone without asking first and until now they have always been good. I have also told them never to call premium rate numbers, explained the huge cost AAGGGGHHHHHHHHH

do you have walkabout phones? if so just take them all with you when you when you go to bed.. you may have to resort to putting a lock on the phone as a temporary measure....
WOW that is some bill ....

You could try putting the number into google and it may show you what it was for.

If this was me when I was young .... way back when of course..... my parents would have told me that I'd have to come up with the cash. Either by doing jobs to work it off at an agreed rate, or by handing over pocket money on a regular basis.

    ouch, you have my sympathies.

Ring up your telco and ask if they can block premium rate calls. Personally I'd spend the quid just to see what they've been calling.

Might as well have all the facts before you tear their limbs off! :)

I remember running up huge phone bills too when I was a teenager. How my mum & dad didn't go beserk is quite beyond me!

I agree though that as well as a rollocking, they need to work it off, have pocket money docked or both.

The number is for cheats for Habbo Hotel, which is some online game the kids play. The latest kid craze.

I will block premium rate numbers and oh yes indeed they will pay they wil be working this off when they are 25. I am furious!

My main worry is how the hell do I pay? I don't have that kind of cash just sitting around, at the moment I am working my but off to get this house redecorated on no money to get it on the market. I need the phone for the business, so can't risk being cut off!!!!!

feed them bread and water for a few weeks, that will help make the connection for them
  • Could you contact the telephone company and see if you can sort of spread the amount a bit? Explain the situation? WRT the kids - it would be no more habbo hotel if they were in my house!! Thats how I hit my son where it hurts - remove the PS2 and xbox - or even worse for him, I just take the wires away and leave the console sitting there so he can look at it and "think about what he has done". Gawd that makes me sound really evil!
 £2 savings - so far £20

Think if it was my DD(11), she would be banned from using the internet and have job duties-or pay back a contribution towards the bill.

May seem harsh, but they have to learn;)

Hope it goes well when they come in from school.

    Good Luck

I caught our son calling the competition lines shown on kids TV. Thankfully I caught him doing it and was able to explain the implications of this.

We had taught him how to use the phone in case of emergencies.

I rang up BT and they blocked all premium rate phone calls.

Not sure what Telecom Provider you are with but you should be able to set up a monthly payment plan with them. You can also place a call limit on your account to stop you over spending. This is with BT mind you I am not sure which provider you are with.

Have you considered blocking habbo hotel on the net? I would personally, tell them if they can't be responsible with the way they use the computer you will just close down the sites they use until they can use it sensibly.

Sounds harsh but it might get the message through to them.

oh my gawd!! I would have been in soooo much trouble if that were me! Do you know which one of the kids it is?
I would definitely make them pay it back, how about getting them to clear out their things to put on eBay? Might be a good way of spring cleaning too. When I was young we had an allowance of £10 per quarter on phone calls (pre mobile days) anything over and it was deducted out of our pocket money. Have you found out what the number is yet?
