can they do this?
I swapped to Scottish Power from British Gas for my electricity in feb 2008
I am now being billed 2 years later by British Gas through a collection agency for an amount I was told nothing about - my understanding at the time was that they are unable to change over if there is a debt on the account
I was never contacted to pay British Gas - they seem to have gone to the collection agency without giving me a chance to pay it
2 weeks ago I called them and they said it had been a mistake as i was on a pre-payment meter and they would call the collection agency and tell them (the woman actually put me on hold to make the call - or so she claimed - and came back to me telling me she has informed them and it was sorted)
Today I have had a card from the collection agency telling me they had called while I was out and "intended to call back"
Can British Gas bill me 2 years after the event?
Although I cant prove my first phone call with the woman who claims to have contacted the debt agency does that feature in any way to my advantage?
would like to know if British Gas have left it too late
(I am with them for my gas but this afternoon switched to equigas because British Gas can go hang if ths is how they run things! I know theyre all the same but it FELT like a bit of revenge!)

yes they can bill you 2 years later, you can run up a bill on prepayment which is why it is important to ensure your meter is on the right tarrif especially when prices change.
ebico is a good move they are cheapest for prepay gas0 -
Ebico are the cheapest PAYGE so that is a good move.
However you owe a debt and you will be chased for it.
