best free expenses tracking software?

Can anyone recommend some software to help track what I'm spending? I have tried one program recently (money manager ex IIRC) and wasnt very keen as it seemed a bit long winded. I just want to track things like how much I spend on food, books etc, so I can see where my money goes.

Thanks.

    What about www.spendingdiary.com

Or just using a spreadsheet with columns to categorise everything.

ok, I'll whack a spreadsheet together if that's the case. Was just wondering if there was an easier way though.

    TY for the responses.

  • mint.com will keep up with a lot of your financial transactions. if they won't...money strands will probably do all transactions.

Do you know I feel quite stupid now:o. I have seen other posts about people following their spending on Mint and I assumed that they were talking about a Mint credit card account.:o

Off to investigate the mint.com website now.:D

If you have excel or something already on your computer, there is usually a template for household expenses. Personally I use one from someone on the frugal living challenge, you put your budget in, and track everything spent and it lets you know if you are over budget.

  • I use Money Strands, it downloads from all your bank accounts / credit card / savings and lets you track what you spend on what.

It has some good reports to, you get a balance of flows report that shows you how you do each month.

And... it has a IPHONE app so you can view all your accounts on your IPHONE.

And... you can export to CSV so you could create your own reports in excel.

I used to use MS MONEY but when nationwide dropped support for background banking I stopped using it.

    Check it out at

    https://money.strands.com/moneystrands/home.action

    PS

I don’t work for them, but I really am truly impressed.
  • Excel or the MS Works equivalent if you don't have MS Office. Google is crap.
