Assuming Melbourne, Australia - we like Quest Royal Gardens Apartments...have stayed their twice and will stay there next time as well...because they are serviced apartments, they have full kitchens which we find very handy, even if we don't use it extensively it's nice to have. Very conveniently located to the CBD too...and tram stops right by the property.

Probably not the cheapest option - but we really love the apartment concept.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Or Melbourne, Florida - always get that one when I try to book a flight :rolleyes:GlennTheBaker wrote: »Melbourne, Derbyshire or Melbourne, Australia?
What is your husband doing while he is there? Where will he be going (eg tourist stuff, business)? I am from Melbourne and could recommend quite a few but it depends on the purpose of his visit.0 -

he is going there on holiday firstly flying to sydney they going to melbourne , he is a rugby league and aussie rules fan so will be taking in sport mostly . he is hoping to get a ticket for the NZ v Aus game in melbournes new stadium as the game is on while he is there . he will also be going to Geelong for the first time to see his cats play . from melbourne he will then be visiting his brother in Auckland but will be in melbourne for a week . sorry it took so long to get back my computer has been on the blink . your help appreciated0 -
OK, so he is a sports fan, almost all of the sporting stuff is based just south east of the city so it would be worth him staying there, either south of the city or in Richmond, the suburb the sports arenas are in (there is a big road that basically has the MCG where they play cricket/aussie rules football, the tennis arenas for the Australian Open and this new 'rectangular stadium'.) The MCG runs tours which he might find interesting, as it is the church Melburnians worship at!
There are a few options:
-Hotels on Wellington Parade, such as the Hilton on the Park (http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/MELHITW-Hilton-On-The-Park-Melbourne/index.do?WT.srch=1), would be walking distance (approx 10 mins) to the stadium. It is in a nice area and is also walking distance to the city. I think they are having a sale with 50% off weekend rates at the moment which might help.
-Hotels in the city centre, particularly on Flinders/Collins st would also be close, a short tram ride away at most
-Crown towers (the hotel attached to the casino in Melbourne http://www.crowntowers.com.au/) is also very very nice but not cheap
-The Hotel Windsor (www.thehotelwindsor.com.au) is meant to be beautiful, that is about the same distance as Crown away from the sporting precinct (10 mins on the tram)
-If you're just looking for budget, the best option might be the Albany hotel (www.thealbany.com.au), which is a slightly longer walk to the stadiums (20 mins, or short tram ride). This is meant to be very nice for the money, it is actually in a suburb though, not the city centre (slightly further out than the sporting stuff).
The quest hotel recommended above would really require two tram rides to the stadium, or a long walk and a tram ride as it is on the other side of the city.
Those rugby tickets will be like gold dust as the new stadium only seats 31,000 and Melburnians are CRAZY about their sport, also that is the first game in the new stadium. I suggest he starts looking now (and keeps looking!). The aussie rules football he could just turn up, although even though he wants to see the cats, I would recommend going to the MCG (they will play away there) as that is the best place to experience it.

We are going to the MCG and staying at the Travelodge. It's close to the MCG is very reasonable in price and has some very good writeups on tripadviser.0

My parents (aged 70) stayed at the Travelodge (can't remember which one - there are two) and were very impressed. You can sign up for special offer alerts too.
