                    Hi all,
I don't know whether this would be better off in the benefits board, but I'll try this one first.
Thanks

This is confusing so I've tried to be as accurate as possible.
I am lucky in that I have received my student loans, but I do have another problem. I am a single parent of 2 primary aged kids, and between my job and becoming a student I was on income support, child tax credits and housing benefit.
When I became a student, I notified the job centre, and they said they needed my final student loan agreement to come to a decision on whether I would receive any income support (allowing me to continue to be entitled to housing benefit). I took them all the correspondence from student loans co, which included the payment schedule.
They stopped my income support in November, saying I hadn't provided them the 'final' notice. I contacted student loans co again asking for this only to be told firstly that they were still working on correspondence I'd sent them in August so it wasn't finalised.
When I phoned again about 4 weeks later (10th December) I was told that I hadn't sent them proof of my separation status (I've been separated over 5 years, and husband lives overseas). I was upset that I'd never been asked for this before, but sent it to them anyway that same day.
I phoned before Christmas to be told they're still working on October correspondence, and today I phoned to be told they're working on November. I contacted the job centre / income support office before Christmas to tell them that I still hadn't received the notice and they said that I would be on suspended income support until I eventually get it.
Now, I come to what I'm really worried about:
I've still been receiving child tax credits and housing benefit, which apart from the payments I've received from student loans (see payment schedule above) are my only income.
*I'm worried that the housing benefit people are going to say I haven't been entitled to it all these months and I'll have to repay.
*I'm worried in case they eventually realise I've been suspended from income support, suspend my payments and I won't be able to pay rent.
My rent is £1000 per month (London prices) which covers me and 2 kids for a 2 bedroom place, which is covered by Housing Benefit / Local housing allowance.
If I don't qualify for any income support, can I still get housing benefit? I would not be able to continue studying if I don't get it as I can't hold down a job as well as keep up my study schedule, and mind my kids.
I just see a mess looming, and want to know if there is anyway to get around it.
If there's anything I haven't made clear please ask.
I don't know whether this would be better off in the benefits board, but I'll try this one first.
Thanks

Hi, I am in the same boat as you with my housing/council tax benefit. I am a single parent with three children, and was able to start my part-time degree in September 2009. I didn't realise that my income support had stopped in October, until this month (didn't check my bank statements properly -really stupid of me I know). I found out when ringing the Income Support office that they had sent me a letter asking for my payment schedule/final assessment in October which I did not receive (due to Royal Mail strikes??!!). My payment schedule/final assessment notice only came three weeks ago, and I sent it in this week. So since October, I have been receiving Housing/Council Tax benefit and child tax credit like you and have not been receiving income support. I can only hope and pray that I am still entitled to income support from when they stopped my payments. They also told me that if I do carry on with my studies, I need to apply for a full-time degree and apply for everything going (grants, loans, etc) to show the government that I have applied for everything I can, and then I can apply for income support to carry on studying. But this will be means tested in that even if I do get all the grants/loans, I may not get income support if I get too much money coming in. (hope this makes sense).
My youngest child will be seven in November, so I will not be entitled to Income Support from October. This means that I will not be able to complete my studies - I am hoping to become a teacher so that I can support myself and my children without staying in a low paid job and relying on benefits to top up my income.
From what I have looked at on the directgov website, you can still get housing benefit if you get job seekers allowance. But as you have said, it means that you have to be available for work, and I am the same as you in that I cannot work, study for a full-time degree and look after my children on my own. I suggest that you go to your university and speak to a student finance adviser there to find out how you can keep on studying - I have tried today to make an appointment for myself to see a student finance adviser but due to weather, no-one was in the office so hopefully will have better luck tomorrow. good luck!0 -

Even if you don't apply for it, it still counts. So, if you're entitled to £6k worth of grants and loans, they're all taken into account. However, there are some grants and loans that are ignored.I am the same as you in that I cannot work, study for a full-time degree and look after my children on my own. I am also a mature student and single mum to two girls. I am shocked to hear you are having problems with receiving housing benefit if you are not in receipt of income support. It was my understanding that ALL mature students who were single parents are allowed to receive housing benefit. I am not on income support during term time and housing benefit pay my rent, and during the summer holiday's I am entitled to income support as the last loan/grant recieved in April is not enough to live on for five months. Just to add, I was told by my local authority that is a general consensus that single parent-mature students are entitled to housing benefit as the loan/grant income replaces income support in payment type and amount.?
